    refrigerator recommendations?

We got one of the stimulus coupons today, so now we need to choose a refrigerator. Does anyone have recommendations on a brand to avoid or what to get? We have it narrowed down to a handful of units, but I would like to know if anyone here has a horror story about a fridge or one that they have had good luck with.

    Re: refrigerator recommendations?

    We went with this one:

GE 25.0 Cu. Ft. Side-by-Side Refrigerator - GSH25JSXSS at The Home Depot

Home Depot has 10% off so with tax it was $1,154 and it qualifies for the $500 rebate :D :D :D

Start and end your search with Whirlpool. If you don't want to take my advise, get a recommendation from an appliance repair tech that you trust. I would be shocked if they didn't also recommend Whirlpool.

I agree with this. My wife and I bought a Whirlpool Gold two years and have been very please with it. Price was excellent and the space inside was very good. Parts inside are high quality and durable.

    Re: refrigerator recommendations?

A year ago we bought a Kenmore Elite 24.5 cu ft side-by-side from Sears. It's fabulous - - but we bought from the Ft Doge Sears because the Sears in Des Moines drives me insane. Just had a friend buy their appliances from Sears in DSM and had major problems - finally arrived a month late with nary an apology from Sears.

Of course, I just tried to look it up online but can't find the exact model...

Also bought a stove at the same time, gas Kenmore - LOVE it.

    Re: refrigerator recommendations?

We've had a couple problems with our side by side Whirlpool in the 4 years weve had it. The ice maker has gone out twice, and something that controlled the defrost went out a few months ago. All of our kitchen appliances are whirlpool, and have had no problems other than these and had always heard good things before, but I might try a different brand next time. We'll see how it goes the rest of the way I guess.

    Re: refrigerator recommendations?

I would go with a Whirlpool, Amana, or Maytag.

I interned for Amana refrigeration in college and know that they actually cared about the products they shipped out to the stores unlike some other companies.

    Re: refrigerator recommendations?

I hate my side by side that came with the place. Limited space and water and ice come out the door. I hate it.

The new design of the Whirlpool ice maker with the storage bin in the door is one of the simplest and best on the market. I made the mistake of buying GE the previous time - 3 ice makers in 7 years and then the compressor started crapping out after 8.

The move to go green is one of the worst things that could have happened for refrigerator reliability. They try to squeeze so much out of the compressors that it's hard to get them to last 10 years anymore. Don't make the mistake of paying extra for a 10 year compressor warranty. You might get a new compressor, but the rest of the system including the evaporator is them contaminated with all of the old metal shavings from the compressor that crapped out. The repaired system will simply not cool worth a darn. Just bite the bullet and go with probably the only company left that knows how to build a decent compressor - Whirlpool.

    Re: refrigerator recommendations?

I finally got one of the refrigerator coupons around 1:30ish. I was trying to get the dishwasher but every time I tried to send my info "this page cannot be displayed" would come up. I switched to refrigerator and got one almost immediately. Than I tried the cooling and washer and no luck there either. Anyone here get any of those?

As I posted earlier I interned at Amana and compressors was always a very important topic of discussion.
We had ours I believe come in from Brazil: Embraco ::: Energy Efficiency
