    Big 12 Coaches Salaries

There is a debate whether McDermott should get a bump on his 650k salary after Iowa paid Lickliter 1.2 M. For comparison's sake here are the rest of the Big 12 salaries:

    Gillespie 1.8 M
    Barnes 1.8 M
    Self 1.6 M
    Knight 1.3 M
    Anderson 850 k
    Huggins 800k
    Sutton 800k
    Bzdelik 750 k
    Sadler 700k
    Capel 650k
    McDermott 650k

Baylor doesn't release salary info...but it is specualted Drew is getting close to 800k. So that puts McDermott last in the Big 12 as OU is going to give a raise to Capel in the next few weeks....do we really want our men's basketball coach to be last in the Big 12 in salary?

Also it's worth noting, Texas' new women's coach is making 500 k more than McDermott now.

well McDermott did agree to those terms so, i guess for now he has to deal with them. As for a raise, I'm sure if the cyclones make some noise in the upcoming seasons, he'll have another 0 at the end of his paycheck.

When he starts winning I am all for giving him some cash. After next year lets get him a new contract.

You know, you don't give a guy a raise just for showing up. He shows results, he'll get compensated.

    Re: Big 12 Coaches Salaries

We had to pay McCarney and Morgan off, in addition to our current coaches. We also just extended our woman's coach to a sweet deal. While all this is going on, we have plans to upgrade facilities. As said above, money doesn't grow on trees.

exactly, and he left UNI cuz he wasn't getting enough, so it was his choice, but I am glad to have him here, but it is the contract he signed for now, so he'll get more money after some W's...he knows the business. If ISU finds itself in the top half of the big 12, I think he should get a NICE race. But I don't think a raise would be in order after only 1 year into the contract and a 15-16 record, we all know the circumstances, but that should still be unacceptable for ISU basketball. I have a feeling in due time he will get his deserved cash.

    Re: Big 12 Coaches Salaries

We have the 4th highest attendance in the conference and the lowest paid coach in the conference. Wrong answer!

Lickliter is almost making double what Greg is and WE are supposed to be the basketball school????

    Re: Big 12 Coaches Salaries

Mac has a lot of incentives in his deal from what I remember. He could make about $1 mil per year. He also gets an automatic $50,000 raise each year. Right now we are buying off Morgan and we had just bought off LE. Just because Iowa way overpaid Lickliter doesn't mean everyone else should just follow the leader. Remember that we also have one of the lowest athletic budgets in the Big XII, so if you use that logic maybe his salary doesn't look that bad. How can you pay top wages if you have the lowest budget?

    Re: Big 12 Coaches Salaries

Something tells me that McDermott will get some assurances from Pollard that the cash will be coming his way with a little bit of time, if he doesn't have those assurances already. I think GMAC is the coach for the forseeable future at Iowa State, and I'm very, very happy with that, but I do have a problem with an immediate raise after one year.

    Re: Big 12 Coaches Salaries

He has a contract that both parties agreed to. Usually, when a renegotiation is done it is a direct result of the coach having had great success and the school is trying to buffer itself against losing that particular coach to a higher bidder. In short, the coach has some leverage in the situation.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I am not hearing McDermott's name being thrown around in any of these coaching searches (save for the Iowa gig...which he really was not a candidate for). If he would have had a "WOW" first season at ISU that may have happened but, obviously, it didn't. So I don't think that McDermott has the leverage to get a renegotiation. If Pollard does renegotiate, then he is spending additional money unnecessarily.

I hope most of the contracts that our coaches are signing these days are "incentive laden"...I have no problem whatsoever paying for results (wins, championships, NCAA appearances, etc.). I don't want us over paying for mediocrity.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

I agree with some results he gets a raise, but it better NOT be adding a zero at the end!

    Re: Big 12 Coaches Salaries

McDermott has a GREAT contract. I believe the terms are that he gets a $75,000 raise every year...which puts him at $725,000 for next season. But, here is the best part of the contract, every bonus he earns (winning the big 12 conf, winning the big 12 tournament, making the NCAA tournament, every round advanced in the NCAA tournament) is AUTOMATICALLY added as part of his base salary the next year. So, If McDermott gets a $100,000 bonus for reaching the goals of his contract, he is making an extra $175,000 the next season with the possibility of repeating those same bonuses and adding them to his base again the next year. Great contract.

As far as Iowa paying almost double for their coach....well, they are overpaying and I guarantee they could have gotten Lick for much less. They just wanted to make a statement. Of course it helps to not have to buy out Alford's contract.
