Heading to my 1st school board meeting tonight

Rumor has it the West Liberty school system will discuss eliminating the bilingual program to save money. West Liberty has arguably the top bilingual program in the state, and the population of the town is 40% hispanic.

Going to be a packed house, well, for a small town anyways.

The hot topic should be service at local eating establishments.

Hopefully it stays on topic, but yes, that could come up.

Don't think the school board will discuss the track. Rest assured, it is not going anywhere.

Yea these ESL programs can really hurt small school districts finacially. It's going to become more and more relevant in the near future. I know of some schools who are forced to bring in extra staff to accomate a handful of students, this has created some budget issues for the "mainstream" students programs.

Kinda pointless to move a program established in West Liberty, Muscatine County, to the IC school district in Johnson County.

What will be more relevant in the next 30 years is the need for today's children to know Spanish, for as much as your local "english only" citizens will tell you that there is no need for such programs, despite the demographic fact that the language will indeed become necessary.

Simple solution- provide proof of citizenship and local residency to be able to access the district language programs services (whatever they may be).

I'm confused. Is the issue an ESL (English as Second Language) program? Or is it offering Spanish as a foreign language?

I am going to put 5% odds that having students know spanish will ever be a 'necessity'... probably even lower than that

How about the odds that it will become a competitive advantage for school districts, akin to being able to offer AP classes and the like?

Re: Heading to my 1st school board meeting tonight

Indianola is having an open-forum tonight to discuss their pending budget cuts...want to expand elementary school class sizes, cut aids/associates, merge positions across schools, cut the home construction course at HS, and cut the FFA/Agricultural Education program, among other things.

I really wish I could attend to support the FFA program...experienced 4 great years in it and it's a great opportunity. Hoping that they get a good crowd of support.
