    Who was ISU's best kicker?

I don't know why this thought popped into my head, but ISU has had some damn good kickers over the years. Who, in your opinion, were the best? In the era I'm familiar with (80's on) I'd rank my top three as:

    1. Jeff Shudak
    2. Alex Giffords
    3. Ty Stewart

Re: Who was ISU's best kicker?

Since I only heard of Giffords, and I had a class with him, I'd say Giffords

The kick he missed to beat Barry Switzer's Sooners still pisses me off, though.

Re: Who was ISU's best kicker?

Are we talking place kickers or punters?

    Punters:
    Carl Gomez
Tony Yelk (except for slow release resulting in several blocks early in his career)

    Place:
    Jamie Kohl
    Adam Beneke

Jeff Shudak was the most consistent at FG's.

Although he wasn't the best kicker and was a punter handling kicking duties, I'd take Carl Gomez with the game on the line.

Kelly Goodburn punted for ISU before transferring. He won a Super Bowl ring with the Redskins.

Brandtner has to be one of the top punters, IMO, even though he struggled a bit in a few games this year

    Ty Stewart...

Or Yelk... he made that 50 yarder in the Independence Bowl the first time... and he had a CANNON for a leg...

Shudak was a stud, didn't he rock a mustache as well?

I think he rocked the full beard, Grizzly Adams style.

In my following of the clones, I'd say Ty Stewart. I remember him hitting a 58 yarder or 2.

Re: Who was ISU's best kicker?

I'd say Jamie Kohl or Adam Benike. Carl Gomez made a few important kicks in his time too. As a field goal kicker, it's hard to pick Yelk, but he was a good punter and good for kickoffs. Brandtner, followed by Blankenship get my votes for best punter.

These are only for guys who played during my tenure of conscious fanhood.

Or were those 54 yarders...time is moving on here. Either way, he had a great leg.

Re: Who was ISU's best kicker?

Statistically, it would have to be Shudak.

    58-79 all-time in FG's, with 6 of them over 49 yards.
    92-95 all-time in PAT's.
    266 points. Still first all-time.

He was also pretty clutch. He gets my vote.

And yes, Stewart did have two 58 yarders, both in 93. Crazy, but true.
