Why only 5 in Big XII with wrestling?

I know that wrestling has been dropped at many schools for lack of funds or to get closer to Title IX compliance. I can even barely recall when the old Big 8 started losing wrestling programs.
My real question is, since I've always associated wrestling with football (strength, agility, etc.) why Texas hasn't promoted wrestling, given it's obsession with high school football.

I had a wrestling coach that taught at a large school in Texas. He wanted to start a wrestling program. They told him no it would take away from the FB program.

Wrestling is quite big in Texas, but it will almost never catch on with football. Still, Texas has enough money and resources to have a team.

I'd really like it if Texas got a team, then ISU could beat the **** out of 'em on a consistent basis in something.

What makes you think we would consistently thump Texas if they started a program? If Texas wanted to have a program, they would likely throw a ridiculous amount of money at the program and would have the best facilities and would over-pay for coaches. We might have the upper hand initially, but UT would likely close the gap in a hurry, IMO.

Um... because we are Iowa State, that's why. Only program with 1,000 dual wins, 8 National Championships, 17 National Runner-ups, 65 Individual National Champions, 14 Conference Championships, 199 Individual Conference Champions, home of Dan Gable and Cael Sanderson, thats ******* why.

ISU is a top dog in wrestling and it will stay that way.

One would think that K-State could have a decent program. Wrestling is very popular and there are a handful of decent junior college programs. There are no college teams in the state, unless Ft. Hays has a team.

Sorry, but that really doesnt mean much. How much do we pay our coach again? How much do we have to spend on facilities? Texas has more money than they know what to do with. They could pay 5x what we pay a coach and build specacular facilities and not think twice about it. Get the best coach and the best facilities, combined with much better location, you're going to have much better chance at getting the best recruits. Combine all those together and thats a recipe for domination.

I hate it when people have this attitude

oh wait.... you weren't using it to try and make excuses for losing or something going horribly wrong?

Iowa has the wrestling recruiting hot-bed dominance like texas does for football.

It would be like ISU stealing football recruits away from texas on a yearly basis... not going to happen.

Best recruits come from this state. TX might be able to field a decent team, but they would consistently take 4th or 5th place in the Big12. That is a main reason they will NOT jump in.

If anything, the dominance of ISU and UI put more strain on the sport than anything else.

If ISU's department was on the level of Texas's that might be a good comparison.

Just because the talent is here, doesnt mean it'll always want to *stay* here. Ask Harrison Barnes, Kirk Hinrich, or Nick Collison about that. The local talent could keep us from falling to the bottom, but texas could definitely poach off some of those who dont really think staying in-state is a big issue.

Re: Why only 5 in Big XII with wrestling?

I absolutely disagree that TX would dominate in wrestling... TX is TX in many things, but not ALL things. ISU and UI will continue to dominate this sport no matter what school decides to join in or how much some schools out of state pay for coaches. IMO, period.

Re: Why only 5 in Big XII with wrestling?

I think Iowa State and Oklahoma State could always use the "were long time power in wrestling" card to draw recruits. But Texas would most likely always field a very competitive wrestling team because they could wow all the recruits with awesome facilities. Flashy facilities draws recruits and Texas would be able to do it. Also, Texas would own their own state in wrestling recruiting, so they would not need to poach Iowa.

Texas hasn't even been "Texas" for That long in football. It wasn't too long ago that A&M was the best team in texas.
