    Free antivirus programs

What are good free antivirus programs? My 76 year old mother-in-law doesn't want to pay $40+. And, I don't think she is likely to be visiting high risk sites, so she probably can get by with a free one.

Microsoft Security Essentials. Best program out there right now. AVG 2nd best- used it before MSE released.

    Re: Free antivirus programs

Can you post a link or the web address? I used Bing to search and there were several that looked like they might be fakes.

    Thanks.

Avast and Avg have been good to me.

Excessive intake of alcohol, we all know, kills brain cells, but naturally it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers.

I agree with the Security Essentials recommendation for most average users.

Are we assuming she had Windows 7 or is there an XP version? I use MSE on my Win. 7 laptop and Avast on XP desktops.

I think it'll work on XP and Vista in addition to 7.

I use AVG. It does the job pretty well....one of them like Mcafee came with my computer, but I disabled it in favor of AVG
