Cubs fans, who's the 5th starter?

Lilly, Z, Demp, and Wells have 4 spots locked down. Who will be number 5? The candidates are likely Gorzelanny, Marshall, Samardjdlkfja, and the new guy, Silva.

I think Marshall has proven to be too valuable as a lefty out of the pen, and occasional long relief. Samardzija is a head case, in my opinion. I fear he's a career AAA pitcher. (Hopefully he enjoys DM.)

I think it will come down to Gorz and Silva. Silva has something to prove this season, and definitely has better "stuff" when he's right. But I'll give the early nod to Gorzelanny. More of a hunch than anything at this point, and it would be nice to have another lefty in the rotation.

Having said all that, I hope the Cubs are in position to add a #2/3 type pitcher at the deadline. I think the most obvious weakness is starting pitching right now.

It's bad that our fifth starter options are between Gorzelanny and Silva. Honestly, I'd rather bring someone else up from AAA or just go with a four-man rotation.

Re: Cubs fans, who's the 5th starter?

i think silva will suprsie some people and get the 5th spot.. not suprise people by being very good, but just being a serviceable 5th starter. i'd have to think the cubbies make a run for ben sheets or someone similar around the trade deadline as well..... if not, i could see the young gun Jay Jackson coming up at manning the 5th spot in mid summer

I'm a lot less worried about the quality of our 5th starter than I am the quality of our front end guys. Z has proven that he'll never grow up, despite what he says every off-season, and he may never be a 20-game winner. Lilly has been pretty reliable on the whole, but he's coming off shoulder surgery and has demonstrated he can hit some nasty slumps. Dempster continues to surprise me as a born-again starting pitcher, but he's more of a location guy than a stuff guy, and I worry that he's just going to hit the wall at some point.

The way I see it, the Cubs have a lot third starters. If they're going to make some noise this season, we need front end help in the rotation.

I think Pretty Boy Samardzija gets it. Hes been throwing well in practice as of now.

Re: Cubs fans, who's the 5th starter?

I'd say that Marshall is sometimes serviceable as a starter and sometimes horrible, but almost always effective out of the bullpen. That seems to fit his makeup and gives him a lot of value there.

I'm think Gorzelanny. Seems like he had some effective days, at least right when we got him.

If this team stays healthy this year, I think we look all right overall.

Since we are an elite team now, let's go get that One Cyclone Moment.

They better hope so, because they really don't have a bench. Lilly is probably going to miss the first month due to having his knee scoped and then missing a week due to a viral infection, so the Shark will probably make the trip north to start the season.

Yeah with Lilly starting the season on the DL the Cubs may have to put Silva as the 4 and then Shark and Gorzo battle for the 5th. If Gorzo returns to where he was 2 years ago it will be his spot I think.

Re: Cubs fans, who's the 5th starter?

In recent years, the Cubs have had a ton of off days in April and May due to early season weather in Chicago and have been able to go with 4 man rotation early in the year. Maybe that happens again this year.

Re: Cubs fans, who's the 5th starter?

I think that the cubs will be in the same situation (I'd rather have silva over Suppan though) as the Brewers. They have a pitcher who isn't all that good, but is making a ton of money. You would rather see that player playing than cutting him and getting nothing for the money that you are paying him.

I think Gorz probably has the inside track but you never know. I doubt Lilly is ready to start the season so 2 guys will get real game auditions for that #5 spot to start the season probably.

Lilly had his shoulder scoped. You may be thinking about Soriano with the knee.

That's a good point. Lilly's situation will allow them to get a better look at their eventual options for the 5-spot.

Re: Cubs fans, who's the 5th starter?

Yahoo! Sports - Jeff Samardzija spent time in the Mexican League last fall working on the breaking pitch he needs to be an effective big leaguer.

"He used to look like a football player who was trying to pitch," Cubs pitching coach Larry Rothschild said. "Now he looks like a pitcher who just so happened to play football in college. He's come a long way."

Chicago has two openings in their rotation. They made a $10 million investment in Samardzija three years ago when they signed him.
