    Daisuke Matsuzaka - "Gyroball"?

I see that Daisuke Matsuzaka is pitching for the Boston Red Sox today.

I keep on hearing that he throws a "gyroball"

Other than taking one of those Greek Sandwiches that you buy after a night of drinking and wadding it up into a ball, can anyone explain what exactly a gyroball is?

    Re: Daisuke Matsuzaka - "Gyroball"?

There was a great piece on sportscenter last night/ this morning regarding it. Basically it has the spin of a breaking ball/slider but moves in a straight line. When a pitcher throws a curveball, the seems tumble over each other creating a "red dot" that the batters can pick up on and theoretically wait on. Same with a slider. The gyroball has the same affect, but comes in faster and never breaks.
The report had a physician and a baseball guy talking about it and said it really is a "mistake" pitch that was discovered, because what pitcher wants to throw a straight pitch that's a little slower than a fastball. But you have to be able to have a good breaking ball to set up the gyroball...

    That's my understanding...`

To add to what isuarch80 posted, others have also claimed it to be like a changeup with screwball esque movement. I'm looking forward to seeing it.

I have also heard it may not even be real, just a myth, like the Loch Ness monster of pitching.

No matter what, I hope the Red Sox get creamed.

    Re: Daisuke Matsuzaka - "Gyroball"?

i have seen him pitch on mlb.tv three times. the gyro ball is a cut fastball that cuts more than anyone elses. i have the same action on my cutter but mine only goes about 60mph as his goes 90mph. he just has such a great repertoire of pitches that he fools a lot of really good hitters. he has a 12-6 curve as well as a 2-8 curve. he has two really good change ups also. he fools so many hitters that announcers are quick to dub a pitch the gyroball even though it may have been a straight change or a simple slider.

the knock of diceK is that has never faced adversity. he has never failed in baseball. so there is no gauge as to how he will respond when a team scores 4 first inning runs. he is a mystery he could be great or he could be the next hideki "fat toad" irabu.

I like Japanese players, the same way I like Euros in the NBA. I hope he succeeds, but as a Royals fan, I hope he get completely pummeled today.

    Re: Daisuke Matsuzaka - "Gyroball"?

Its just another variation of a curve ball like a slider or a cutter, it just has a little bit of a different spin/break. There are only so many ways you can grip/throw a pitch.

lol What does that have to do with it? If he isnt born in America it is totally different. Just because your great great grandfather came over from a different country, that means you cant lay claim to this being your country? He is a foreigner, and he made a joke about it.
