High ABV Beer on tap for Iowa Breweries!

Bid to allow stronger beer on tap to pass this session | desmoinesregister.com | The Des Moines Register

With the passage of this law, Iowa will officially have the least paternalistic alcohol laws in this country, and I'll hopefully be able to buy Boulder Brewing Company's Double Mojo and Hazed and Infused. It will be fun to see what Olde Main and Millstream can come up with!

Hate to break it to you but the way I read the story, it only effects what the Iowa breweries are able to produce. It doesn't change what can be brought in and sold. I guess I would assume this means the higher alcohol volume beers will still not be able to be sold here.

Actually it does say that beer under 12% will go straight to the distributors. It's up to the distributor to order it.

"Under the proposal, out-of-state distributors could ship higher-alcohol beer directly to consumers, which means the state would collect less distribution revenue. But the state likely would make up the differences in sales taxes, division officials said."

High ABV beer is already available in the state. I can go up to Hy-Vee at 42nd and University and buy a 6 pack of Sierra Nevada Bigfoot Barelywine which is 9.6%, or Flying Dog Horned Dog which is 10.2%. I could go on, but there is already a lot of high alcohol beer in Iowa. In the past, those breweries had to turn their stuff over to the state and let them distribute it as liquor. Now it's direct to distributors. There are some breweries (like Bell's) that refused to deal with the Iowa Liquor Board, and can now work directly with distributors and liquor stores in the state.
