All aboard for Rocky Mountain Cy IV

For the fourth time, The Cyclone Gridiron Club is sponsoring a rail excursion for ISU football fans to the Colorado game.

At this point, we're trying to get a handle on how much interest there is this year.

The schedule calls for boarding Amtrak's California Zephyr at Osceola about 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11. The train gets to Denver at 7 a.m. Friday, Nov. 12. We will stay in the Comfort Inn Downtown, which is in the trendy LoDo District -- 16 blocks of pedestrian mall with bars, restaurants, shops, etc. Saturday a chartered bus takes us to Boulder, where the Alumni Association hosts a tailgate with food and beverages for sale. Then it's the game and a bus back to Boulder. The train leaves Denver at 7 p.m. Sunday night and gets back to Osceola at 8 a.m. Monday, Nov. 15.

Package includes roundtrip coach fare on the train, two nights in the hotel (with full breakfast), bus to Boulder, game ticket and baggage handling between the train station and hotel. Cost is $400 per person based on double occupancy, with discounts for seniors (62 and over), juniors (under 18) and three people sharing a hotel room, and surcharges for sleeping accommodations on the train, single-occupancy at the hotel or boarding the train at Burlington, Mt. Pleasant or Ottumwa. You can board at Creston or Omaha at no additional cost.

This is a lot of fun, but it's an adventure because the Zephyr has Amtrak's worst on-time record.

We haven't formalized anything yet. My guess is that the deadline will be sometime in May or June.

I have no experience with trains so I'm curious how a train could have a poor on-time record...

Pack some booze...I've done this overnight train ride and it can be very fun. Riding/sleeping on a train is a bit rough, I recommend drinking and then falling asleep (read pass out)

Planning on hitting this game, but going with some friends and I think we're doing a brewery tour around the front range. Boulder Brewery, O'Dell's, Left Hand, and New Belgium are on the list!

Same here. Trying to make a mini-vacation out of it next fall. Might try to do every game next year (i.e. Flag Guy & Superfan)

I'm guessing he'll be looking for the woolen mills.

If he's after that, he should vacation at Osage. Big sock factory up there.

Re: All aboard for Rocky Mountain Cy IV

How can a train have a poor on-time record? Uh, let me count the ways....

    1. The company that owns the rails -- in the case of the Zephyr, that's the U.P. -- hates being required to let Amtrak use them, and assigns a much lower priority to passenger service than to freights.

    2. Weather. The Zephyr eastbound runs from near Oakland, CA, through a couple of mountain ranges. It snows in the mountains in the winter. It snows a lot.

    3. Union/federal rules. When a train crew's shift expires, the train stops until a new crew can take over. A couple of years ago this happened to the Zephyr in western Nebraska (not on the Cyclone trip). The train just stopped at a siding in the middle of nowhere and sat there 4 hours while another crew could be driven by truck to the site.

    4. Unexpected encounters with foreign objects. A few months ago, somebody drove a pickup around a warning arm and the Zephyr hit it in Eastern Iowa. That delayed things. On our trip two years ago, we were stopped for over an hour in Eastern Colorado when the train hit an elk, which rolled under the engine and tore some hydraulic lines loose.

We have actually been very fortunate on our three trips. We only had a major problem once, which was in '06. The train was supposed to leave Denver at 7 p.m. Sunday. It actually left at 3 a.m. Monday.

This is the primary reason we use the schedule we use, and the primary reason we stress the idea that this is an adventure. If we could be sure the train would run on schedule, we could leave Osceola Friday night and be back Sunday morning, with no need to stay even a single night in a hotel.

Any idea how much it would be for four in a room?

Did that two years ago for the game, it's a blast! We stopped at New Belgium, O'Dells, and Ft. Collins brewery. New Belgium has a cool bar/lounge feel that's a good size but we really enjoyed bellying up to the Ft. Collins brewery bar. The bartender was drinkin a beer with us and just kicked back and bs'd with us for a while, it was a lotta fun.
