If he takes specific questions, I would like to hear what his take is on the LB situation heading into next year. How would he compare the competing group of '10 to this past year's starters. Also, I would like his take on how he thinks the OL might shake out.

    Thanks.

He said at the beginning of last year how he would like to get Tiller in at the beginning of the 3rd quarter to get some reps and run some plays. I know that the scores really didn't help Tiller's shot at getting into games at those times.
I want to know if he still has that intentions this year.

I am hopeful that stateofmind will be willing to summarize the goings on.
    Thanks to all.

Re: Coach Rhoads will be the speaker at the

He gave us the timeline of what the team and coaching staff go through in a year.

    Recruiting
He said that in December it is recruiting nonstop, of course that is around bowl practices. He talked about how there can only be 7 coaches out on the road recruiting at one-time.

He said that when recruits come in the first planned stop is the Learning Center. They are very proud of that place and it shows. As most of you know, ISU topped the Big XII in graduation rates and I think football was either the tops or just had improved at least .3 GPA.

January is all-out recruiting. Sunday through Friday on the road, two days back here and hosting visitors. When they are checking the kids out they have a huge board of names. CPR will draw a line under the positions. If the players are above that line, ISU is committed to accepting if they accept. If they are below, they are the fallback, etc. If they have a tough time deciding on a guy they go to the intangibles. Family, character, grades, etc.

He said they have started recruiting for 2011, and if a guy isn't "above-the-line" they will ask them to come to camp. One of the camps I was intrigued about is what they call big man camp. Turning over tractor tires and pushing tractors, kind of like the strongman I guess.

He stated again that it's not about that guy that didn't sign, it's the guy that signs and doesn't perform. There is an emphasis put on responsibility to the University and the community around Iowa.

    Trust
He said there are two kinds of trust. Blind and Earned. He said for example, the kid has to blindly trust the training staff that there way is the right way and after time they will evaluate if that blind trust is earned going forward. He made a point that this is a two-way commitment.

He said he gave his guys a two day vacation after going nonstop for fourteen months! These guys are maniacs when it comes to working. I used to think that would be a great life, not so much anymore.

    Practice
He said that they will be practicing for the spring soon and that he will always keep the spring game the Saturday of VESHIEA week. April 17th if you haven't seen. Unfortunately I have a wedding to go to... He won't reschedule for me. (Don't worry, I didn't ask him)

I thought it was hilarious that he had to get back to Ames to run some sort of "testing", I can't remember what he called it. Either way, it was going to test them mentally and physically. He made a point to reference that the trash cans would be all over the place, you can understand why I'm sure.

He told about all of the different restrictions that are put on them around practice, recruiting, etc. (Rich Rod could take a class from Paul)

    Questions
There were about 4 or 5 questions asked where Paul went deep into each response. I can't remember what many of them were about since it was yesterday, but I'll paraphrase. (I'll edit later if I remember what they were)
What is it like having your father around? He said that his Dad comes around at least once a week with pen and paper and Paul notices him taking notes. I thought it was funny to hear him conscious of his Dad's critiques.

We all feel it was a successful season and what, based on learning curves, can he do better? (I asked this one?) He didn't give too many details, he basically said that the motto of this team is to Continuously improve in every aspect. This is what the main motivation was from the beginning and is being preached even more now. There is no way that they can be satisfied with any current success as you will never succeed without continuous improvement.

Another question about recruiting that I can't remember.

    Something about his local ties.

I'm terrible at taking notes, so this is just off the top of my head from yesterday. Hopefully you find it interesting. It was a great opportunity to hear the coach up close and personal. He drives a bright red Ford pickup if you were curious, no I'm not a stalker, I just pulled up around the same time he did. I had never thought about it, but I didn't expect him to be in that.

I didn't check closely, but it sure might've been.
I also forgot that he has a goatee now, which I assume will be copied by others. Just so you all know, I've had mine for 14 years...
