Varner Wins, No. 2 Cyclones Dismantle Huskers, 34-7

AMES, Iowa – The second-ranked Iowa State wrestling team capped off the regular season in dominating fashion Sunday afternoon with a 34-7 win over Big 12 foe Nebraska on Senior Day. The highlight match at 197 pounds went to the wire, with top-rated Jake Varner (24-0) turning away Craig Brester (25-1) of Nebraska in overtime, 6-4. The Cyclones took eight of the 10 contested weights, with five matches resulting in bonus points for the ISU team effort. The victory is the largest Cyclone victory over the Huskers since 1985 (34-4).

“We’re getting better,” ISU head coach Kevin Jackson. “Jake got a big takedown when he had to,” Jackson said. “We practice those situations all the time, trying to get a takedown when you are almost drained.”

    Varner is just awesom.

That was a great match vs Brester. Brester wrestled his match, got the first TD, but Varner is in such good shape, that he got the win.

I really wanted Jake to win that one more convincingly. Very happy with the win though.

I watched the Varner match on tape delay yesterday. The end of the match was the loudest I had heard Hilton through the TV in a long time. One of the best matches I have ever seen.

Brester is a about as solid of wrestler as you can get, which led me to believe me that this match was gonna be very close. Never before has this match ever been in convincing fashion as Brester and Varner have always wrestled close and thats is why he is ranked 2nd in the nation. Varner proved why he was a national champ. He had twice the conditioning that Brester had and that was the difference in this match. That was by far the most exciting match or most exciting thing I have been a part of in my life. Way to Go Jake and way to cap off a great career at Hilton. You are truely a great representative of Cyclone Nation!!

Yes, Brester is a great wrestler, that is why he was 25-0 and Ranked #2. He had a very good TD on Jake. The Big 12's and the National's will be tough. Varner rode Brester the entire 2nd period for the National Championship, but Brester got out right away this year.

They need to get more matches on TV. I did not attend, but felt sick after the match that I did not make the 3 hr drive to Ames for this one.

ACtually last year their first match Varner smoked Brester like 10-3...As Brester tried to open up against Jake and got spanked, ever since that match, Brester has been very conservative against Jake...

UMMMM. My point is (that I did not explain). When you watch a football game, BB game or wrestling meet, you get excited about being there.

Some people will argue that if you put all the events on TV, no one will go, they will just stay home and watch them. I'm saying that by putting them on TV, more people watch, get excited and will attend the event.

I do need to buck up and get a Clonezone membership. It would be great to watch all the events and specials they have.
