Anybody from or familiar with Monticello, Iowa?

I had a phone interview for a job near there with a camp for persons with developmental disabilities called Camp Courageous on Thursday. I don't know if there will be a 2nd interview or not yet, but I thought I would ask around on here to see if anybody is familiar with the town or the area at all.

I know it's small (3,800 people) and that it's centrally located between Cedar Rapids, Dubuque, and Iowa City, but that's about it.

Monticello is my hometown, I know that there are a couple other native Monticello guys on this board as well. What would you like to know?

My friend was the City Administrator there for a while. He liked it and I always enjoyed my visits. Its a bit too far from cities for my taste but if you dont mind that its pretty comfy.

Nothing to see here mods. Keep moving.

Re: Anybody from or familiar with Monticello, Iowa?

Is it a good place to live? What kind of social/cultural opportunities are there? If there's not much going on, is it close enough to those bigger cities I mentioned to make it worth to live there? What are the people like?

Re: Anybody from or familiar with Monticello, Iowa?

Monticello is about 45 min to CR and an hour to Dubuque, it has the benefits/drawbacks of living in a small town. Not a whole lot to do, but it is home of the Great Jones County Fair which brings in similar acts to that of the State Fair.

I enjoyed growing up there, and I think it is probably above average in terms of things to do, lifestyle, etc. of towns its size. The people are pretty nice, but you have your local expert yahoos who are in retrospect, hilarious.

Overall, not a bad place, predominately a Hawkeye town but there are some loyal Cloners.

I do not know if I would call it centrally located to Iowa City it's about 50 miles away.
Things to do visit the state prison in Anamosa, we use to play in a softball league that played against prisoners, talk about a home field advantage

Re: Anybody from or familiar with Monticello, Iowa?

Monticello is one of my favorite Iowa towns. They have a surprising amount of industry for a town its' size and it's not that far away from two pretty nice sized cities.

If I were going to settle someplace in Iowa that wasn't where I own a house now, I'd choose Monticello. Nice downtown. Not ghost town-ey at all, like most Iowa towns it's size.

Re: Anybody from or familiar with Monticello, Iowa?

Grew up in Monticello and will probably go back to farm very, very soon. Lots of local experts who have seen it all and done it all.... at Kirkwood. Very big Hawkeye town even though there are a ton of ISU people. Typically small town, but with a lot of rift raft with the prison in Anamosa and Four Oaks (criminally disturbed teenagers) in town.

    I'd live in Cascade.

close to Mt Vernon - the home of Cornell. You could extend your college experience by living there.

Camp Courageous if a wonderful place, and would be a great job opportunity. I'd jump on that one.
