Re: Big Ten Hires Firm For Expansion/ Tex,ND Not On List

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Missouri, all the way.

They bring more than any Big East school, IMO, save maybe Rutgers.

Maryland or BC out of the ACC wouldn't surprise me at all. I've heard that Maryland wants out of the ACC. Both offer big TV markets.

Re: Big Ten Hires Firm For Expansion/ Tex,ND Not On List

I'm telling you, I think State could be a serious candidate here, which would be a HUGE positive step for athletics in Ames.

Can't believe that people thought Texas and ND would even consider. I met with the B11 commissioner a year ago, and he said that ND would never join because could not stand to be forced to share its media revenue. The way the B12 is set up, Texas keeps most of theirs. No way these schools would join the B11 and be forced to split it evenly with the other 11 teams in the conference.

Lets hope JP can put together a great pitch if it comes to that.

Texas was never going to the Big 10. The ego of people/fans of that conference is laughable.

I don't think there is any chance for Iowa St. to go.......Big Ten already has the TV market in Iowa with the Hawks and would have nothing to gain by adding ISU. IMO

Iowa State may get on the list as a courtesy by Alvarez to Pollard, but ISU has no shot a joining the Big 11.

The only way I could see us getting in is if the guys at the top (PSU, Michigan, and tOSU) want to get the 12th team for revenue purposes, and they want a current BCS member that isn't a complete joke (a la Syracuse), but won't ever challenge them for the conference title in football. Add in geographical fit, and strong academics. Enter ISU.

I've been thinking for a long time that it might not be an elite program, just because I don't think the heads of the conference would agree to someone that would knock them around, like Texas.

Agreed on that part, though we fit geographically. I'd love to be playing Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois every year. I think all those games would have a lot of fans buying tickets for away games.

Notice they don't say who the 15 are on the list, but they single out two who are "not" on the list - to me that means the list is ND and TX.

I wouldn't say we necessarily strong on the academics. I think they take someone from the east. Rutgers, Syracuse or Pitt. We really don't bring a market to them that they don't have the majority of already. A Rutgers brings in more of the east. A Syracuse does that as well in basketball.

If I have a guess I will say Rutgers.

As someone else said in a previous thread, if there are too many 'strong' programs, it could cause problems for all. Teams like IU and Purdue may feel they dont belong if theyre getting pounded by the top. If you add a blend of one or two 'power' teams, and then one or two more teams that fit the profile you described above (like ISU) that isnt expected to challenge for a title yet fits geographically, it could expand the conference without changing the overall degree of competition too much.

Rutgers would fit in well in the Big 10

I tend to agree. But I will say that the Big 10 doesn't add a whole lot by bringing in Pitt (although I still think they're one of the most logical choices right along with Missouri), and how much are they really gaining by having both Indiana and Purdue as well as Illinois and Northwestern in the conference. I still think ISU is the 5th or 6th most likely (behind Pitt, Missouri, Syracuse, Rutgers, and Maryland).
