    Red Light Cameras

I used to hate them, never have got a ticket from one but I am gradually warming up to them if they are placed at dangerous intersections. One intersection I would LOVE to see one put is at the Keo Way and I-235. I see people blow red lights there nearly every night and am surprised someone hasn't got killed there yet. Watched 3 cars go speeding through a stone cold red light the other night while the light for the traffic I was in had a green light for nearly 5 seconds. DM cops could setup shop right there and make a killing on tickets I think, every night when I've had to stop there, at least 1 or 2 cars go flying across that intersection after their light has turned red and I make for sure they are done before I even dare cross if I'm the first in line for the green light.

Any other places around town you wouldn't mind seeing cameras at?

    University and Valley West Drive/35th/100th.

It wouldn't really work well there, however.

You must like big brother. Also since we have more red light cams shouldn't we have to have less police officers since they have other things doing there jobs?

Nobody but HB knows for sure. You pretty much know nothing....like Knownothing would like to say.

I'm fine with red light cameras. I'm not fine with speed cameras. Does anyone know when they are going to put up the spped ones on 235? That will be the day I remove my front plates.

    Re: Red Light Cameras

I dont want west des moines to put them in anywhere until they can fix the problems they have. I dont know how many times ive sat at a light where the sensor (one of the newer camera-based ones that west des moines has all over) doesnt detect my car and i sit there for several cycles before running the light.

Also, on the same lines... anyone else hate the left turn red lights that west des moines seems to love, especially all up and down jordan creek pkwy? I understand no protected arrow, but dont make me sit there 5 minutes when theres big breaks in oncoming traffic..

Sounds like a great plan - considering they take a pic of the BACK of your car (my wife has 3 tickets - 2 from being stressed out the day before our wedding, and one from a mobile can in a school zone)

Yeah...the speed cameras could cost me a lot of money!

I agree about the speed cameras. I'm curious as to what speed triggers a ticket too because sometimes you have to go certain speeds to be safe and keep up with traffic around you

But if they had the cameras, wouldn't everyone else be getting rung up and likely be slowing down too? So there wouldn't be the need to for "keeping up".

(I don't care and am not fond of that idea either).

Must have changed because when I got a ticket the picture just got the front of the car.

    Re: Red Light Cameras

I'd be fine with speed cameras, if they actually set the speeds fairly. IMHO, 235 should be at least 65 since theyve widened it, and it shouldnt slow down from 70 until youre much farther in from either end (not north of ankeny, for sure)

I agree with a lot of that, seems like a lot of the sensors aren't "sensitive?" enough. I hate waiting at intersections at night with no traffic and the light doesn't change for several minutes while no cars go by.

The red light cameras still have some form of human judgement though. It videos like 15 seconds before and after each red light and an officer looks over the "queue" of violations and determines which ones are legit violations. For instance you can probably not get a ticket for failing to stop completely on a right turn on red as long as you made an attempt to stop. If you just rolled through without making an attempt you will probably get a ticket. Another example is as long as you are in the intersection while the light is yellow you are fine too but once you cross the line after the light turns red you get a ticket and they have even made the yellow lights longer at these intersections so you should have plenty of time to get through or stop.

From the west I think it's ok. Doesn't drop down from 65 til about 31st or MLK, does it?

I think you almost have to do that with how congested it gets at rush hour, and much further out.

235 is 55mph in the downtown area and 60mph from the edges of downtown till it turns 65 at the mix masters.
