Big 12 Collapse = Death of ISU Athletics as we know it

There is talk of Colorado going to Pac Ten; Missouri, Kansas, and Nebraska considering Big Ten; even Texas to Big Ten. If one, or a few of these schools make moves being rumored about, it is very likely that the Big Twelve would fold. Where does this leave ISU? The only talk of ISU joining the Big Ten is on ISU boards, and is never talked about by National reporters, or people close to the Big Ten. Our budget and television markets are likely too small for that conference, and they are the only BCS conference to even consider us with our geographic location. If the Big Ten would not take Iowa State, our only moves would be to MWC or the MAC, making us a 'mid-major' school.

How will Jamie Pollard sell "The Next Big Step" when our biggest conference opponents every year would be Miami (Ohio) or Utah? If it takes 15,000 Nebraska fans to fill our stadium already for ISU/NU in Ames, how can we expect anything more than 30,000 for the biggest MWC or MAC Conference games at Jack Trice? How could we expect any sellouts during the year in basketball when our biggest game would be Iowa? Games against teams like Texas and Kansas would no longer take place in Hilton, and would be replaced by UNLV or New Mexico. With the lack of revenue for ticket sales, it would be very hard to support teams like Womens Basketball, Wrestling, and Volleyball; and extremely hard to keep coaches like Bill Fennelly and Christy Johnson. Bill Fennelly and Christy Johnson are Elite Coaches in their respective sports, and should never be associated with a mid-major program.

We better hope that the Big 12 holds together, or that Jamie Pollard has enough insight or is smart enough to get us into the Big Ten. If the Big 12 collapses with all these other potential departures, and a Big Ten rejection of Iowa State, ISU Athletics will never again reach the levels of success, fan attendance, and general support it once had.

There are ton of Big 12 teams that won't be going anywhere. My guess is that even if someone leaves, there will continue to be a BCS conference that ISU is a part of.

I don't understand the panic. ISU has been in a major conference for 100 straight years and has never been historically successful athletically. Why would this change? The Big 12 may fold but I don't see ISU going to a midmajor. Just my 2 cents.

Re: Big 12 Collapse = Death of ISU Athletics as we know it

The only place you'll find any talk about a big 12 collapse is on big 10 blogs or on kxno

(or the 5 threads on here, daily)

i'm not sure why the big 10 fans are so obsessed with the idea of the big 12 breaking up... i guess they're tired of getting their ***** handed to them every bowl game between the two

I say we just pre-empt the Big XII collapse and join the SEC.

If the Big XII was really in this much trouble wouldn't the commissioner be doing something drastic to keep it together? I don't know a whole lot about this stuff so maybe not.

The Big 12 does need to get it's act together on a network...and support the universities that do want to stay in the league.

Re: Big 12 Collapse = Death of ISU Athletics as we know it

My guess is if someone leaves Big 12 will take Arkansas or TCU and make it a better conferance. Especially Arkansas. They are the one school that can compete moneywise with Texas. big 12 may come back with a different name at some point also.
Then again the Big 8 was a good conference and if we lost Texas we could add some schools like Utah and TCU.

Oh cripes..Some of ISU best days were when the Big 8 was going and not the Big 12.

What will happen will happen. Why are people so afraid of change sometimes?

We will hardly have time to get the required 3-4 threads on this topic today. Oh well, there is bound to be an off day in the next 14 months concerning this topic.
