    AAA memebers

How many people have AAA out there? I was thinking with as much as I travel (30k/yr.) it might not be a bad idea.
Are the benefits really worth it? What else do you get from them besides the obvious towing/jumpstarts, etc?

    Re: AAA memebers

the towing is well worth it for us. sometimes its just easier to tell them to pick it up.
even if it is to bring it back home.

The travel planning thing works slick. Hotel discounts are nice. Roadside assistance is nice. No idea what my parents pay for me to have that crap.

    Re: AAA memebers

Oh yeah discount on Hertz rentals... though that doesn't do you much good if you have non-AAA drivers on the account

And IcSyU, probably about $100/year, give or take $35 if it's Gold membership or not

If it is strictly towing you want... I've noticed a lot of car companies now have it as part of their service (I think my Hyundai offers some towing service... I dunno). AAA is nice though because it doesn't matter what car you are in or who's car it is - so long as you are in that car

I was with someone who didn't stop for gas leaving Cedar Rapids and ran out of gas 10 miles outside of Tama. It wasn't my car, but calling AAA to bring us gas still worked and sure as hell beat hiking into town in January

Same idea if you or your friend locked yourself out of your car/rental car, need towing, etc

    Re: AAA memebers

You don't have to be in the car if you catch my drift. Trust me, if you're slick, your car can get towed due to parking violations and you can get AAA to pay for it.

Can't say I've ever dealt with that - I was smart enough to never get towed due to parking violations

    Re: AAA memebers

My brother got my ex and me a membership for a wedding present 25 years ago. It paid for itself every year back when I had beater cars. Now I will go for a couple of years without using the actual emergency service benefits but will still get the discounts at restaurants, museums, zoos, hotels, etc. as well as the travel agent services. Don't forget the free maps, guide books and Trip-tiks before any trip.

Just when I think that it is not paying for itself we will have something stupid happen like running out of gas or a problem where we need an emergency jump or tow. One tow can be worth two or three year's membership dues even at the AAA+ level we have.

If you have kids, it is a must. They can use their benefits even if they are a passenger in someone else's car!

I should tell my brother that was an great gift sometime. Oh, well, I guess he will read it on here.

The jumping part came in handy back in December when my battery died one Sunday morning when the helpvan wasn't running.

    Re: AAA memebers

My in-laws give it to my wife and I for a gift every Christmas. We haven't used it much but when we did it was really, really nice to have. I still drive a beater car though so it's pretty worth it to me (especially since it's free).

    Re: AAA memebers

Yes! It is totally worth the $55 you pay for it. I've had my car jumped a few times and have locked the keys out of the car one time and waited at most 45 minutes (and that was a Friday of a holiday weekend at 5:30). No copay or anything like that.

But my best AAA story was when I was probably 23 and traveling to LA for work. We took our rental car to Hollywood one night and parked in a parking garage. My co-worker looked the keys in the car with the car running. AAA was there in probably 30 minutes even though we could barely explain where we were. After that expirence, I decided I would never be without it.
