    Weekend in Omaha

My wife and I are heading to Omaha this weekend for a little quiet time away from the kids. We're staying downtown near the Old Market district. Does anybody have a recommendation on eating places or shops to visit? I'd love to find a good Greek Restaurant. I think we'll probaby hit the IMax theater at the zoo while we're in town.

    Re: Weekend in Omaha

I grew up in Southwest Iowa so I would like to think I know the Old Market pretty well, but for the life of me I couldn't think of a really good Greek Resturant.

    My 2 Suggestions:
The Upstream Brewery. Really nice, sophisticated atmosphere and good food. The Old Market location is in a pretty cool old downtown building. Great brews as well!! Upstream Brewing Company

Rick's Cafe Boat Yard. This one has great food and overlooks the Missouri River. Pretty cool setting, when the patio is great even though the Missouri River is nothing special. Not sure if the patio is open in the winter though. http://www.rickscafeboatyard.com/

I like Mickel's (Mexican Resturant) and the old classic Spaghetti Works as well.

    Enjoy!!

By the way Priceline rocks...Got a nice motel for almost half of what they were advertizing for prices.

    Re: Weekend in Omaha

Not a huge greek fan so I can't answer that question but there is a lot of great places to eat in the old market.

Up Stream on 11th and Jackson

The French Cafe on 10th and howard

Blue Sushi Sake & Grill 416 South 12th AWESOME Sushi and I thought I hated sushi until I ate here. Very nice place with a great atomosphere.

I'd help you with the shopping part but A. I hate shopping B. The old market has TONS of shops.

    Have a good time!

    Re: Weekend in Omaha

I'd make sure to stop by the Homey Inn - champagne on tap.
My favorite restaurant in the Omaha area is in Bellevue called the Amarillo - puts Hickory Park BBQ to shame.
Then I'd get breakfast at the Levenworth Cafe - probably a chicken fried steak.

Your best bet for Greek would be the Greek Islands at about 38th and Center - around 3 miles from the Old Market. They have been the standard for over 25 years and feature a full menu with most of the standard Greek choices. If you want something a little different, try the Chicken Santorini stuffed with spinach and feta cheese.

    Re: Weekend in Omaha

Dubliner Pub in Old Market. Live Irish music and usually a slightly more mature crowd. Always a good time.

I have never had a gyro, but I suppose Omaha's most successful Greek restaurant is King Kong (It's not ji-row! It's year-o). There is one on 13th street near Rosenblatt (a short drive north from the Old Market.

    Kinnick smells like syrup.

Best bars downtown for the more mature crowd:

    The Dubliner
    The Upstream

Recommend starting at The Upstream and finishing at The Dubliner dancing to live Irish music!!! I miss Omaha now, thanks!

    Re: Weekend in Omaha

The only place I've eaten at the Old Market was Stokes. Try their cheesy enchiladas and try to tell me they're not the best ones you've ever had. I dare you.

Edit: I take that back. I also ate at Upstream. Also excellent. It was after an interview, so I didn't get to sample their beers, but I heard they're great.

    Re: Weekend in Omaha

If you're a breakfast fan, the best joint in town is Amatos at 64th & Center. It was featured last year on the Food Network's series on Diners, Dives, and Drive-ins. The mistake omelet is a one-of-a-kind with some great Italian meats in it. The ricotta cheese pancakes with either blueberries or strawberries are another standard. Sam, the owner, is the type who trades insults with the regulars but is full of stories to share with strangers if you ask him to stop by your table.
