Nebraska adds year to Pelini's deal raises pay to 2.1 million per

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Nebraska has added a year to the contract of head coach Bo Pelini and raised his base pay to $2.1 million per year.

The deal keeps Pelini at the Huskers' helm through Feb. 28, 2015. It provides a retention bonus as well: $500,000 if he's still head coach on Jan. 31, 2015.
Also announced on Monday were new contacts for his coaching staff.
Pelini's brother, defensive coordinator Carl Pelini, has signed a new contract that gives him a raise to $375,000 a year. He made a little more than $208,000 last season.
Offensive coordinator Shawn Watson will be making $380,000

How do the justify paying the offensive coordinator more then what Carl makes, their offense was very underwhelming last year.

How did the OC get a raise? Better yet.... How did he not get fired? The Fusker offense was absolutely awful last year. As I am writing this I am wondering why I am complaining??? lol. Hopefully the OC brings 8 more turnovers to Ames this year.

the DC got a 80% raise and the OC got a 2% raise. Watson has had a very very good offense the last few years....last season was an outlier....

Injuries played alot in to why the Husker offense struggled last year.

As one Huskere fan to another, garn91, I would totally disagree with your assessment that Watson's problems this year were wrapped around the injury situation. Yes, there were injuries. Yes, the Huskers went into the season without their "pounder" backing up Roy Helu. But to say Nebraska's offensive woes were simply because of injuries is, quite honestly, off base.

Every game, other than possibly Texas Tech (and I could build a case for the TT game falling into this category, as well) lay squarely at the feet of Shawn Watson. His unimaginative play calling allowed even the worst of defensive coordinators an opportunity to stop NU. He clearly misused Cody Green, to the point I was concerned we might see him bail. Once Nebraska got past the "shouldn't have been on the schedule" games, their offensive problems were glaring.

When Osborne and Devaney were at Nebraska, not to mention Solich, there is no way on God's green earth that the Huskers wouldn't have gone for that fourth and one late in the ball game against Virginia Tech to put the "nail in the coffin." It was obvious Bo had absolutely no confidence in the offense's ability to convert, so he decided to play defense and we all know what happened. A broken coverage and we lost a game that if we would have had an offense with a heartbeat, we would have won.

The Texas game would have been won with an offense that had a heartbeat, and lets not even discuss the Iowa State game. We had numerous opportunities to put the hurt on Texas Tech in the first half, but couldn't move the football when we needed to. In spite of giving up 31 points, that game still could have been won with a decent offense.

Giving Shawn Watson a raise of a penny after last year's offensive performance is clearly a waste of money. Let him prove himself like Carl did and then I'm okay with paying him a little more. If Nebraska wouldn't have given Watson a raise and he chose to move on, I wouldn't have lost a second of sleep over it. Believe me, there are dozens and dozens of offensive coordinators out there who are much better than he is.

People jumped on the Watson bandwagon because they said he had great offenses at Colorado. Well he did, but anyone who watched Colorado football closely knew that Gary Barnett called the shots offensively when he was there. Husker fans want to talk about the "huge" offensive numbers put up in 2007 and 2008. Well, I would say two things. First of all, I don't even talk about 2007 because when your team is down by 30 points at half time (thank you Bill Callahan and Kevin Cosgrove) and you are throwing on every down, you are going to rack up some yardage. Secondly, with regards to 2008, all you have to say is Joe Ganz. Take Joe Ganz out of the equation and the Huskers would have struggled mightily in 2008, too. And speaking of Joe Ganz, if Watson is such an offensive mind, why was Ganz holding the clipboard as a Junior while an underperforming Sam Keller played every down?

Yes, the offensive game planning against Arizona in the Holiday Bowl was encouraging. But one game certainly will not make me into a believer! It still is hard to get past the fact that with any offense at all, Nebraska may very well have been 12-1 or even possibly 13-0 heading into their bowl game. Worst case scenario, they would have been in a BCS bowl game. Best case scenario, they might have been playing for the National Championship. In my opinion, giving a raise of any type to a coach who single-handedly destroyed what could have been a "special" season is very hard to justify.

I was on that band wagon, but when Lee disclosed he was going to have surgery following the Holiday Bowl, it caused me to take a step back and revaulate things.

No question that if the offense had a pulse in the Big 12 CCG, NU would've won, but what can you do about it now? Nebraska still ended up with a 10 win season, which i'm happy for and eager for the 2010 season.

Besides, if I had to choose between Barney Cotton and Shawn Watson as an OC, i'd take Watson any day of the week

Pelini has done a great job at NU especially with the defense. The NU program was rapidly heading toward mediocrity before he was hired. Too bad for the rest of the Big 12.

I will donate to Nebraska if it helps to keep their offense at the level it was last year.
