    Speaking of "Cup Cake" schedules...

The Big 12 appears to be near the front of the field when it comes to "cup cake" schedules in 2010 according to Joel Barker, Senior Columnist for Bleacher Report. Oklahoma State sits at number-two, Texas comes in at number-three, Missouri is at four, Texas A & M is at number-five, Texas Tech is at seven, and Nebraska is at number-10. That's six in the top-10. Now there's the type of recognition a conference is looking for!

It appears these rankings are based on college football "powers," as I can see softer schedules out there, but they are not seen as football powers.

At any rate, just an interesting read:

I completely understand it for conferences like the big 12 and SEC with absolutely brutal conference schedules. Look at the schedules as a whole, including conference schedules, and *none* of these teams have cupcake schedules.

They took a nice little shot at ISU in Iowa's write up too...

Okay, I can't believe I'm about to do this but I am going to defend Iowa on this one. And not just because their appearance on this list is a slam on us. But how can they be in this list at number 8? They have a rivalry game against a Big 12 school that is coming off of a bowl win in a 7-5 season, and then a road trip to a Pac-10 school that went 8-5 last year. That is one of the ten softest schedules next year? And this guy is trying to argue that scheduling in college football is too soft? Something doesn't add up.

I think the hawks have a very solid non-con schedule next year. Maybe not as tough as ours, but certainly not deserving of any sort of criticism like this.

Okay, I need to go shower now I feel dirty.

Re: Speaking of "Cup Cake" schedules...

This ranking is a joke. A lot of teams have "cupcake" schedules because they play only one tough game. One tough game is all you need - why would you ever schedule more than 1 BCS opponent, especially if they are a highly ranked/traditional power. I guess they want to see "elite" teams play 3 or 4 midlevel BCS teams (eg. Iowa State)

Iowa has the #8 most cupcakey schedule and they play 2 BCS schools, both of which made bowl games last year and one on the road.

Just not a very good list.

In my book, a cupcake schedule includes an FCS school, and three non BCS schools or possibly three non BCS schools and a Wash St. or Indiana or other awful BCS school.

Re: Speaking of "Cup Cake" schedules...

Instead of making fun of weak non-conference schedules maybe this guy should come up wiht a system that rewards you for scheduling a tough one. A lot of the teams on that list will still have a legit shot at a BCS bowl. Why give up home game revenue and take the chance of getting beat if nobody cares at the end of the season.

Sorry, jaretac. I must have had a trace of dixlexia when I typed that. It should have read 2010. I went back up and changed it.

If you play in the big 12 south, the sec, or have a tough rotation as a north team, id say the schedules are brutal compared to other conferences.

The funny part about articles like this, is these are the same people that will be saying teams like Boise State and TCU deserve to be right up there with the Texas's and Alabama's of the world, completely ignoring the complete lack of strength of schedule they often have.

Re: Speaking of "Cup Cake" schedules...

What?????????? Where are my beloved KSU Wildcats on this list? Every broadcaster, journalist, and even the most casual fan from coast to coast knows they have been the model of easy scheduling. Why last year it was so easy they were banned from bowl participation with a record that said they were eligible. Snyder was the man that invented the easy schedule to become bowl material. Is he really slipping that far?

Nope, he is playing the schedule he inherited from the Clown Prince and will be forced to do so for several more years. Ol' Bill will be forced to square off against UCLA, Miami, and Oregon in home and home contests. KSU cannot afford the buy out for these games after paying off Prince to leave.
