    Gilstrap's Extra Year

I don't know if this has been talked about lately but has anyone heard any news about whether or not we actually have a good chance at getting Gilstrap an extra year or is it really unlikely we get him back?

I heard that he said that too.

I wonder if he just flat out said it to some reporter because he really wants to come back.. or if he was asked if he would come back.

I mean if he was asked.. no way does he ever say he wouldnt come back. Very few would actually do that.

If he just came out and said it on his own without being asked.. that would be a great sign.

Maybe you heard something I didn't but I thought he said he was leaning toward coming back. I consider that a big difference. Again, maybe I missed a different quote.

    Re: Gilstrap's Extra Year

Just from watching his body language the last few weeks, I can't imagine he'd be interested in another year. It would be great for us fans but I'll believe it when I see it. He's a long ways from home, needs to start making money for his family, etc. I'd be halfway optimistic for next year if he came back and we added another late recruit that looked OK.

But the offseason for men's basketball is usually more negative than positive so I'll stop dreaming.

In that article it sounds like he was asked vs just saying it. I dont know what else he was supposed to say.

There was an article in the DM register about this and Gilstrap said that he would like to come back if he could.

    Re: Gilstrap's Extra Year

I really think him coming back would be huge. If he is not there were are forced to play a true freshman or a RS freshman at the 3 unless we go with a 3 guard lineup.

    Re: Gilstrap's Extra Year

And the NCAA won't rule on the appeal for at least 30 days after the end of the season.

He wants to come back if he can.

    Re: Gilstrap's Extra Year

I would say odds are that the NCAA gives us the short end of the stick and doesn't grant him an extra year of eligibility just on the circumstances of how he missed years and he spent 3 eligibility years at a JuCo...

    Re: Gilstrap's Extra Year

I think its probably correct that he'd come back, but on the other hand, what else are you going to say when asked that? If youre not sure, you probably would just say yes so you dont get the media going and then constantly asking for the next few months.

    Re: Gilstrap's Extra Year

My bigger question is, apparently the NCAA won't make a decision until after the season. I don't know enough about the technicalities of the rules, but — why such a delay? Either way, it'd be nice to know in a timely fashion.

Would granting an extra year in a case like this set some sort of precedent that would open floodgates for future appeals? If that's the case, then they might as well just say "no" and everyone can move on.

Or, is there something unique about it that doesn't fit well into current rules?

Anyone who knows more about the ins and outs, I'd be curious. I don't have an Eligibility Handbook available.

Its the NCAA do you expect them to act quick? 6th years do happen, but since he took a year off it will be hard for him to get another. But his injury was pretty bad and he took time off for his family, so we will see. It sounds like he really wants to get a degree so we will see.
