    Larry complimentary to ISU again.

    http://www.gazetteonline.com/apps/pb...47/1003/SPORTS

Check out the The Cedar Rapids Gazette article about the McDermotts hanging out with the Eustacys at the the Final 4. Once again LE is very complimentary to the state of Iowa and ISU. It seems to me that a lot of us suffer an inferiority complex to the rest of the country and maybe even EIU but in my estimation LE truely thinks ISU is the greatest institution on the face of the earth.

Anyone remember LE heart to heart talk with Paul Shirley and that gang reminding them to enjoy the moment. Staring up into the balcony, LE would tell them look at this place, the fans go crazy for you like he couldn't believe it himself.

To me, LE is a glass half empty type of guy, but when it comes to ISU he seems to always be glass over flowing.

love this line in the article:

"It's nothing against you personally, but I have no intention of talking to the Gazette,'' Alford told the reporter. ``The way I've been treated, I have no intention of talking to the Gazette.''

Respectfully Larry should be saying those things afer the H#ll he put ISU through. However I will say he's being a lot more classy about the situation than Coach Alford appears to be with Iowa.

Poor Alford. It's all the Gazette's fault now. Maybe one day he will mature enough to admit his faults and correct them like LE has been able to do. But I doubt it.

I like LE a lot because he made a mistake, owned up to it, faced the consequences and got on with his life.

I always liked LE because he held people accountable for their mistakes and held himself accountable for his mistakes. Alford should take a page from this book instead of blaming others for his mistakes.

Not enough of that in the world these days... Too many people are like Alford that want to blame all their mistakes/problems on someone else. You should not blame anyone but yourself for your mistakes. Unless you want to blame George Bush, that seems like the in thing to do.

I agree with both of you. There is a lot to be said about someone who mans up and takes responsibilities for his own actions.
I'm not trying to make LE sound like a saint but I respect his actions to get sober.

Great article on Larry and Greg....classy comments. As for Alford, I don't blame him for not talking. He did get dragged through the mud, not the kind of send off that Dan M. got from Iowa State. ISU holds to a higher standard.

Alford left to take a new job. He wasn't fired. He wasn't forced to "resign". He voluntarily left.

He seems to have forgotten that.

Oh, and obviously LE > SA

Re: Larry complimentary to ISU again.

Larry did not want to leave ISU, he used to always say he wanted ISU to be his last stop until the big alcohol incident. I think his ex-wife and kids may still be in Ames? I know they really liked it in Ames and didn't want to leave and I think that may have had a part in his divorce possibly too.

I have no hard feelings against Larry. He made a mistake and I was willing to let him have a 2nd chance at ISU if he could prove to clean his act up which he did because he's been sober for nearly 4 years now. If BVD wouldn't have handled that situation so poorly Larry may not have been fired and Bruce could have easily reduced the ebarassment we went through by doing something about this before the papers and media got ahold of it and turned it into the monster it was. Bruce knew Larry had an alcohol problem long before this, heck half of Ames knew it and Bruce knew of these photos several weeks before the Rag ever published them but chose not to do damage control and beat the media to it.

I'll always root for Larry, we had possibly 2 of the best years ever of ISU basketball under him and unlike like many of our athletes that have messed up he didn't get a 2nd or 3rd chance like many who have commited actual crimes were given. Granted he was an employee not a student and is held to higher standards but there is still irony when you think about it.

Re: Larry complimentary to ISU again.

If your refering to my comment on Alford, I did not say he was fired or forced to resigned. However, you have to admit he got rough treatment (deserved or not) from the Register, Gazette and Iowa fans in general. And he still may have received the ax at Iowa this year if he didn't leave.
I personally hoped stay at Iowa...his arrogance helped ISU.
