    The Sky is falling

Well it may be a bit early to say that, but I am planing on slacking off at work all do so lets have input on this one...

Texas reportedly talks with Big Ten - Big 12 Blog - ESPN

With the strength of Texas in about every sport this would be a major kick in the crotch to the Big 12. We would have to pick up a marquee team to replace them if the "talks" got any bigger, not just a middle of the road team otherwise I can see the Big 12 instantly dropping a couple pegs on the conference hierarchy. Am I wrong on this or do you guys think an average mid-major type of team would let us keep our heads on high? Who would you want to come in if this the swithc did come about??

I don't think "early" applies to this post.

Texas isn't going anywhere unless the Big 10 wants aTm as well. The big 10 is just flirting with Texas to make ND jealous.

    Re: The Sky is falling

    I looked up the info on ESPN after I listened to Mike & Mike on the drive in and they were talking this up a lot;

they went on for about 5 minutes or so about how good of a move this would be for Texas, about them opening up new markets and cash flow for the move, more lucrative TV deals and how big the games would be when they play Ohio, Mich, and so on, on a regular basis since they always draw big $$ right now. And any extra team travel would be more then offset by the extra revenue coming in. Listening to what they all said if I were Texas I would move.

    Re: The Sky is falling

I've been reading a few articles about this, and the one angle I haven't seen discussed is that I think it seems quite risky for Texas. Beyond just the increased traveling expenses, Texas currently has the most leverage in creating Big 12 policy. As we all know, Texas pretty much runs the Big 12. If they moved to the Big 10, they would have to give up that power. Going from the dominant institution in a BCS conference, to just another big program is certainly a step down in power. Also, what would the UT fans think of the move? This would pretty much end their rivalries with Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, and whoever else they consider a rival. Also, their fans pretty much couldn't travel to away games anymore. As a UT fan, I think I would be kinda ****** off gutting all of those rivalries and traditions. And for what? Big 10 TV Network reveneue? If Texas wanted to, they could probably get a Big 12 TV Network going and make up at least part of the revenue lost from not getting Big 10 TV reveneue.

If Texas really wanted to go after the dollars, they could also just go independent. I have no doubt Texas could easily thrive as an independant like Notre Dame. Now that would make things interesting.

    Re: The Sky is falling

Travel is the big factor in all of this. I mean, what about conference tourneys in basketball? Texas fans are really going to travel to Indianapolis for that? I call BS. Also, they would lose their rivalrys with OU and A&M and most of all ISU

Seriously, I think this is all going down to make ND jealous. News-flash B11....ND will NOT budge. NBC Deal....they can play whomever they want....etc....ND makes enough money on their own.

I would say that Pitt will be in the Big Televen. And be dorks with them all.

Travel has to be a big consideration. Remember it in not just FB and BB. Texas is one of the schools that has 23 or so sports and every one of those team would have to travel.

Can the Big 12 switch commisioners with the Big 10? Those guys at the Big 10 get it. Those jackasses at the Big 12 don't.

This is some guy with an opinion, I have read on ESPN and Fox News there is concrete evidence that talks have begun, this is more than a remote chance.

Does anyone think that this will pressure the Big 12 into a new tv contract or its own network because lets face it this is what is all about?

The commisioners of the Big 12 would be the university presidents.

Just the fact there is smoke out there about Texas and the Big 10 says a lot about the issues the Big 12 has.

The money gap isn't as big as you think and Notre Dame doesn't have the appeal that it once had in the 80's and early 90's.

NBC is paying Notre Dame $15 million a year (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/11/sp...1sandomir.html)

Each SEC school will get $17 million a year from their TV contract with ESPN/CBS (ESPN TV deal will push SEC even further beyond Big Ten, others - Stewart Mandel - SI.com)
