NBC Takes Ice Dancing over "All-Star" Game Equivalent USA / Canada Prelim Game?

NBC explains its ice-dancing-over-U.S./Canada-hockey decision - Puck Daddy - NHL Blog - Yahoo! Sports

NBC is slated to show Ice Dancing over the USA / Canada preliminary game on the flagship channel. There would be a compelling argument for figure skating, but ice dancing? Thats like pre-empting the US Open for Dancing with the Stars.

This likely means that the USA / Canada game will likely not be shown in HD on MSNBC.

Due to the Olympics this year there is no NHL All-Star game. Is this the kind of respect that these professional athletes deserve by stepping away from their professional obligations to compete in the Olympics?

I agree with you that it sucks, but I imagine a lot more people would watch ice dancing then the hockey game.

Re: NBC Takes Ice Dancing over "All-Star" Game Equivalent USA / Canada Prelim Game?

You have got to be kidding me. NBC is a HOCKEY NETWORK. They are the only major network to televise the sport, and now they're hosing the fans, denying them coverage of one of the most anticipated games of the early rounds?

First CoCo, now this. **** you NBC.

I likely wouldn't have watched either, and I'm guessing a lot of other people won't.

    Just saying.

Look, I understand that hockey is a distant 4th place major sport in the US. Even if you don't like hockey you have to admit there's a much larger market demand for this over a sport that is televised every 4 years.

I would have had NO problem with figure skating, the biathlon, downhill skiing. But Ice Dancing? From a network that is trying to get people to watch NHL games on Saturdays? Why?

    They aren't a last-place network for nothing...

I mean, with the exception of Monday and Thursday nights, isn't it a little bit ironic that NBC's best shows are airing on USA?

It shocks me that NBC doesn't view this as a potential ratings booster for one of their regular programs. NBC is saying they're going to lose money on the Olympics, so why not invest in a product you already carry? Televising the US v. Canada match would feature many of the league's current star players, guys playing in those Sunday afternoon games every week. Plus, how many movies have been made about Olympic ice dancing gold medals? It's too bad the owner's lockout has put the NHL in such a bad position that they can't negotiate this on to a major network.

I can't wait until NFL labor talks disintegrate - Better NHL TV contract!

Re: NBC Takes Ice Dancing over "All-Star" Game Equivalent USA / Canada Prelim Game?

According to the network, there are three major sporting events that have more female viewers than male viewers: the Kentucky Derby, the Summer Olympics and the Winter Olympics. Turning three hours of prime-time coverage on the East Coast over to a hockey game isn't exactly catnip to those casual female viewers, despite Sidney Crosby's(notes) pouty lips.
Ice dancing, like figure skating, is a demographic draw; it's the hook for a night of coverage that appeals to a broader audience than hockey does. But it's not the only reason USA/Canada was shifted to the home of Keith Olbermann's foaming mouth.
In essence, committing to a hockey game is committing to a three-hour programming block that can't be interrupted. Imagine the outrage if NBC cut away during the second period of USA/Canada because someone was taking a historic bobsled run. Ice dancing allows for drop-ins at other events, which is another reason NBC believes it's the best option in East Coast prime time.
    Seems to make some sense.

Don't confuse hope for a plan.

    You're joking, right?

I will never understand the people who sit through 9 innings of baseball, 162 games a year and call hockey "boring".
