    Barta vs. Pollard

I love how when Pollard gets the number one coaching candidate on his list every time. He said that G-mac and Chizik and obviously Cael were his top choices and he got them all. He is able to sell our school and his program. Barta on the other hand is just crossing names off his list left and right and does not seem to have any sort of a plan rather than randomly talk to coaches and hope one bites the hook. Keep up the good work JP!

I thought that GMac actually called us, and that JP's number one guy was Altman?

I guess I should admit that is what I heard for G-mac. The point of this implies that Pollard seems to have a plan and can acheive it.

No doubt, Barta is less than what Pollard poops out in the morning. I just hope they can't get any good coach to accept the job.

    Re: Barta vs. Pollard

The major difference between Jamie and Barta, or most ad's for that matter, is that JP doesn't get so bogged down by bureaucracy and trends. He picks his destination and does what he feels, from his gut, will get Iowa State athletics to that destination.

It's hard to go against the grain and scoff at societal norms, but this half-man/half-machine doesn't seem to be daunted by any of it. Most of us are willing to let things go and follow the beaten path. JP creates new paths, and that's why he is and will be successful. That part doesn't really get talked about, but I commend JP for it big time.

    Re: Barta vs. Pollard

A couple things. First, as has been pointed out repeatedly on this site, we have a university president that has given him all the leeway needed to make broad decisions without waiting for approval. UI doesn't have a president, so the Board of Regents (IDIOTS) creates a search committee.

Secondly, and most importantly, JP started almost from scratch. He is also the first AD that had the courage to undetake the facilities in a public manner, knowing that he could very easily fail. He also had to judge right away the direction of each program and aggressively determing the right fit. Barta has a built in cash cow with their football program, Jamie has to create that for Iowa State.

    Re: Barta vs. Pollard

Remember Jamie had a head start because he knew what he was going to do with Wayne weeks or months before we did.

Good AD's like jamie always have a list just in case and who to contact with discretion.

I can not recall an AD other than Bruce that did not say they hired thier first choice. You will hear Barta say whomever he hires was his first choice it just took time to get it done.

    Re: Barta vs. Pollard

I loved this quote from Pollard when asked about a search committee:

    "I am the search committee"

I don't think Altman was #1 on JP's list because I don't believe he ever interviewed Altman.

While I agree that no matter who an AD hires, you'll hear him claim that it was their first choice, I think Barta's contact with Pearl makes it difficult to say this with any kind of credibility. While it may have been just an attempt to keep the fans happy it was still a public approach and public rejection.

Also, if he indeed was never interested in Pearl and just wanted to calm the message board posters, I think he's much too concerned with a vocal minority than he should be and is probably more incompetant than someone who can't land their top choice. I don't think this is the case though, and believe it's just an issue of aiming high and dreaming big. There's nothing wrong with that and he owes it to his employer to try.

    Re: Barta vs. Pollard

I think it's too early to make much of a judgement call. The only name we really know that was on Barta's list was Pearl. The rest is media speculation.

Gary is working with somewhat of a handicap as he doesn't have a universitiy president. Generally he's kept the search pretty quiet, just like JP did. We'll know soon how good a catch he got.

I like JP the way he handled his searches and ultimately am pleased with his hires. We had just as much media specualtion surrounding our searches however.

This is Barta's defining moment. It will be hard for him to come up with a coach that will please that fan base......

    Good post.

While the easy and obvious thing to do for Cyclone fans is to bash Barta - not having a president is really not helping him at all. It would be as if any of you had to hire someone at your job and this outside group of people (Regents) had to have their hands in the pot.

The longer Iowa goes without one, the worse things will get in Iowa City.

    Re: Barta vs. Pollard

The lack of a president is really hurting Barta IMO, and so is a search committee. The rumor of Altman going to Arkansas is making this very interesting. I still say they should go for the guy from SIU, but apparently EIU thinks they are above him. Makes me chuckle...

    Re: Barta vs. Pollard

I was not bashing Barta, I guess I just don't see any confident strategy yet. I almost guarantee Pollard has a short list of replacements should anything happen to one of our coaches. Not that one is leaving soon, but I bet he's always prepared.
