    Need input regarding Laptop

    Hello,

I plan to buy a laptop (the old one is not working anymore and it's 10 years old).
Any comments regarding this one that I'm interested in ? Or any suggestions ?
I'm not looking for a "top of the line" type - just to browse, surf, games (like Civilization - I don't plan to play games like Call on Duty right now, but probably will in the future)

    Thanks in advance !

That's too much money for a "basic" laptop imo. If you want to spend that much it seems to have some good components. 12 cell battery is probably it's best feature that is usually skipped in lower priced laptops.

    Thanks, dmclone !
I forgot to explain that I will need that to work with the office, plus with playing with multimedia and store pictures, which might not make any difference but I'm afraid if I buy a cheaper laptop, would the memory be good enough that the computer still runs fast when running games or editing large pictures ?

that is pricey for a basic computer, but I did a quick search around and there doesn't really seem to be many deals out there right now that can beat that bang for your buck.

I purchased a comparable dell on black friday for $480.

I have bought over 30 desktops and laptops for home and business off the Dell Outlet sites. It comes with a 1 year warranty, I always buy the 3 year NBD. In the last 6 years I have had to use the warranty 5 times and never had a problem getting it done, one time they sent out a technician, the other times it was just plug in new part and it turn on. 1st link is home and 2nd link is business.

4gb of ram on a laptop is pretty good
500gb on a laptop is pretty large to hold a lot of pictures, multimedia, etc
Core i3 processor is good for a laptop

All these things are good for a $600 laptop. Lately in the laptop world it really comes down to just get the brand you like because most laptops outside of Apple are similarly priced. You can probably get a similarly priced laptop from Dell, Asus, HP, etc with similar stats.

Also, do you plan on keeping it for 10 years again? If that's the case then i would load it up and spend more. For people like myself, I will be lucky to get 4 years out of a laptop so there is no use in buying a powerhouse. Plus I have other PC's around the house I use for bigger tasks. If this is your only computer than this is a different story.

As far as "I will need that to work with the office". I don't know for sure what that means since everyone is different. Will you need Microsoft office installed to properly work from home?

Not worth it to load up and spend more to make it last longer. Better off just spending half as much now. Then get another in 5 years.

I completely agree but some people just won't let go.

In 5 years all laptops will have huge SSD's that fly, better graphics, much faster processors, USB 3, etc. and there will probably be a better OS out.

    Thanks again,
My sister in law also wants to buy a new laptop (hers is 4 years old) and she's thinking of getting a MacBook for $999. I am thinking of following your advices - not worth to spend tons of money for something that will be obsolete in the next 5 years :)

Spend a grand and get something with an I7, quad core... also get no less than 4gig ram, 64bit windows 7 OS and a 7200 RPM hard drive.
