This would be great if they bungle this hiring like they bungled the hiring of a University President

    hahaha

I've seen Altman's name tossed around in the newspaper down here but that's as much as I know.

Lowery was the one I was expecting to get the Iowa job.

Lowery gone, eh? If I were Iowa, I'd take a long, hard look at Reggie Theus. He's another former NBA guy with great success and charisma to boot.

Not to mention he was the coach on "Hangtime" and had great players, such as Teddy.

Re: Chris Lowery out of contention

Theus is close to signing an extension.

Majerus is out, Lowry is out, Kruger is out, etc, etc.

The more I read, the more I wonder WHO has been contacted. It sounds like not many people. I guess Altman is still a possibility.

They are coming up on 10 days without a coach.

I think the Iowa people are putting too much pressure on themselves because JP hired GMac so fast last year.

While it would be nice for them if they got someone quick, it's not a neccesity. Better to take the time to hire the right guy.

Re: Chris Lowery out of contention

That's great news. I did not want to see Lowery at Iowa. I don't want to see Romar either. Hope it's Lavin....then they can get all the athletes they want and run and gun with no discipline.

I have to disagree Bob. They are looking at having a mid-major coach in the Big 10, and that doesn't do much for the self-esteem of those people. Also, Minnesota just hired Kentucky's coach (regardless of his stature in the Bluegrass state, he was there for 9 years, and left on his own). You look at the name coaches in that league, and if Iowa brings in a Dana Altman type coach that just doesn't measure up to such a nationally prestigous program as Iowa's.

Somebody like Todd Lickliter is a great coach, but the name doesn't measure up to Izzo et.al. As a people who hate the Hawks, we need to hope that their perceptions of themselves as an elite program will make them hold out for a name, rather than a good coach who is a good fit for the program.

True. Most of what you said is more an ego issue rather than an actual problem. But we all know that Hawk fans have huge egos, so the hiring of Tubby(and lately so many really really good coaches in the Big 10) has raised the perceived bar that the new Iowa coach will have to jump.

I'd rather hire the next up and comming Bobby Knight or Izzo, but Barta and the fans want an established coach. They are going to have to pay to get someone like that. Boy it's fun to watch....
