    GMac and LE Hangin'

I saw this in the CR Gazette this morning in an article on miscellaneous notes from the Final Four. Good to see Larry has rebounded from his troubles.

    Cyclone family
Iowa State’s past, present and future gathered before Saturday’s NCAA Final Four. Cyclones Coach Greg McDermott and his son, Doug, went to the games with former Iowa State coach Larry Eustachy and his sons, Hayden and Evan.
Doug and Hayden are freshmen at Ames High School.
‘‘ We’ve gotten to know each other, and our two sons are great friends,’’ McDermott said. ‘‘He was really helpful when I got the job.’’ Eustachy resigned as Iowa State’s coach in 2003 after inappropriate photos of him at college parties surfaced. He
said his life changed for the better after his ordeal.
‘‘I came to realize that I had an issue with alcohol, and I addressed it,’’ Eustachy said. ‘‘The 23rd of April, it will be four years since I’ve had a drink. So there’s a reason behind everything, and I wouldn’t change things how they happened, not one bit. I think through my sobriety, I’ve helped people gain sobriety. Life’s a lot bigger than coaching in the Big 12 or coaching basketball.’’
Eustachy became head coach at Southern Mississippi in 2004. He led the Golden Eagles to 20 wins this year and earned his 300th victory in the regular-season finale.
Eustachy said he’s had offers to leave Southern Miss. ‘‘I just like where I’m at,’’ he said. ‘‘I feel very loyal and obligated to the people who
took a shot on me when my stuff wasn’t real good.’’
Eustachy said he cherished his times in Ames and returns often to see his boys. ‘‘I’ve never felt more welcomed (in Iowa) than now,’’ he said

I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.

    Thomas Jefferson, 1802

    This is for you....

“I’m just glad I have Homan as my bodyguard,” Eustachy joked. “If I ever make it real big and get to drive a limo everyday, he’ll be driving it. I thought he came off the bench like somebody was stealing his cow or something.”

    Re: GMac and LE Hangin'

    That's good to hear.

There's always been alot of mutual respect between the two coaches. When asked by an interviewer if he talked to any former coaches about ISU before taking the job, McD responded "Larry Eustachy" without hesitation.

A little late, but still nice to see someone associated with ISU that doesn't treat Larry like he has the plague.

Why? I took that statement as him saying that if he hadn't made the mistakes he did, then he wouldn't be in the position he is today (sober).

Good for LE. Good for his family. I'm glad the only guy who has brought us championships, and got a raw deal after he did, still looks positively on the state and ISU.

Look, I am glad that the guy got the help that he needed. And, I appreciate his time here with the back to back titles.

But I still don't see how anyone can say that he got a raw deal by losing his job. I will grant that the whole situation was handled poorly by Van de Velde, and he seemed to take glee in watching Larry get drug through the mud. But in the end retaining Larry would have crippled the basketball program.

Now, he has a job. He says that he likes it where he is at, and that he wants to be loyal to them. I will reserve judgement on the loyalty part, but if he can stay clean then good for him. I do hope that things work out for him.

I'm happy for Larry & he seems to be doing the right things. When he's back in town, you can find him in Ames Racquet & Fitness working out, He'll even talk openly about his struggles with alcohol.

Unfortunately it took those photos and losing his job at ISU to realize that he had a problem. The main thing is that he's still alive and doing what he wants to do: coach basketball.

Actually, it sounds like he is glad that ISU terminated him if you read his quote. This allowed him to get the most important thing (his life) back in order. ISU did the right thing...to keep him would have been nothing more than ISU become an "enabler" in his addiction.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.
