Williams Blog: Apathy…I think not, Gilstrap/Brackins notes

My thoughts on the word "apathy," plus Brackins/Gilstrap notes about next year. Enjoy.

I don't know Chris, I think that 9500 people for a Saturday afternoon game against a top 10 team doesn't seem like people are excited about this program to me.

As for the board, you know that some people are only happy when they complain. The fact that Mac has given these people a lot of ammo by underperforming doesn't help.

I read the presser, and it was a classic fight for my job, you don't know how hard it was when we took the job shtick. The problem was that he contradicted his defenders on here.

He knows that people aren't happy. He needs those people to want to spend money to show their support. If he's doing this at the beginning of February, it is going to be a long last month of the season.

I'm not saying that people are happy about what is going on. I'm saying that the overwhelming majority are not apathetic. There is a HUGE difference there.

Re: Williams Blog: Apathy…I think not, Gilstrap/Brackins notes

I think you can be angry and apethetic at the same time. For instance, I'm mad as hell about the state of the basketball program. This will now be five straight years with no post-season play. I feel sorry for the current college kids that have never gotten to experience a good basketball team.

However, I'm also apethetic in the sense that I no longer go out of my way to watch McDermott's teams play. I used to plan my weekly schedule around these games. Now, I'll watch it if I happen to be home, but I can usually get the gist of the game by reading about the next morning. We'll hang around the first half, McDermott will fail to make adjustments in the second half, the other team will go on a 15-2 scoring run, and we'll be playing from 10 points behind the rest of the game. It's so predictable that it's frightening. Of course I still care in the sense that I'd be thrilled to see us improve, but I'm apethetic in the sense that I don't enjoying watching losing the same way over and over and over.

Now here come the posts saying I'm not a "true fan" in 3, 2, 1....

I agree that people still care.

The problem is I think that people are more angry than anything else. That is a good thing. Because once they get over being angry, it isn't too far to apathy.

    Good write up though

Good points Chris.....there is a lot of season left. I certainly haven't given up on this team and I'll be at the rest of the home games, cheering my heart out for all of them.

As far as Gilstrap and Brackins go, I will be surprised if either of them are back. But it is fun to think that they might be and it is nice that they are considering it. One thing that I think is very apparent is that both of them are taking the decision seriously. That's pretty mature of them. Most of the posters on this board don't show that type of maturity!! I'll always have a soft spot for Craig coming back this year.

I'll play the apathy card. Was gone for the weekend and it never even dawned on me that we had a game against a top 25 opponent. Just found out how the game went when I got on here this morning. This from a guy who was season ticket holder up until last year.

If you're mad, you're not apathetic. If you're not apathetic, you're a true fan, as far as I'm concerned. Don't give up on the team.

That being said, good write up, Chris.

I will be very surprised if Craig is back. Sure would be fun to have SC and DeMarcus Phillips at the #2 all year with Craig , Jvb and Gilstrap.

For the first time in 3 years.. I sat on my couch and watched (most) the game last Saturday. I let my tickets go unused because nobody I called wanted them.

I was angry all of last year... and after the UNI game this year. After that it has just become kind of a joke.

I really wish I could see SOMETHING that would make me think we have any sort of chance at the top 4 in the Big 12 ever again. Im sure it will happen. I just dont see anything to make me think that yet.

I do miss having that fire inside that would make me get really hyped before and during hoops games.

It will be interesting to see if there is a noticeable drop off in ticket sales next year. That will be a big indicator of how are apathy(if any) has set in.
