    NFL may ban 3pt stance

MIAMI -- A ban on the three-point stance? NFL commissioner Roger Goodell says it's possible.
Concerned about concussions, Goodell said the league will keep looking for ways to make the game safer. Speaking on CBS's "Face the Nation" hours before the Super Bowl, he didn't rule out the idea of banning the three-point stance for linemen to reduce the ferocity of collisions at the line of scrimmage.
"As you'll see tonight, you'll see a lot of players that never get down in a three-point stance," Goodell said Sunday. "So it's possible that would happen."

I'm not sure I'm following this correctly. Wouldn't a three point slow them down more than a two point? Why ban the three point stance?

The NFL might as well put two flags on the players belts and get rid of the pads at the rate they are going.

I could see where it'd be easier for them to get their heads up (keep them up), but are there really that many concussions coming right off the line? I would think the open field stuff yields way more. Maybe this is just one of those "gotta do something" things. Not sure there is a lot you can do with football beyond better equipment without neutering the game.

How about a hearty round of PATTYCAKE, PATTYCAKE OR TIDDLEY WINKS INSTEAD, with no helmets?

I can see it for offensive lineman if this is the case. I thought they were trying to slow the defense down by the nature of the quote. There are quite a few offensive lineman already in a two point anyway.

That sounds dangerous. You had better have them wear the helmets.

This is laughable. Concussions don't come from banging heads at the line of scrimmage when you are inches away from each other.

Re: NFL may ban 3pt stance

Yeah, lots of offenses run out of two point stances, but how many noseguards and DT's do you see coming out of a two point? That would be a huge disadvantage for the defense I'd imagine, especially for power pass rushers and in goalline/short yardage situations. Even a speedy DE will use a 3-pt stance to get upfield faster. I think the better solution would be the new concussion reducing helmets and better regulation of practice/game participation after a concussion is suffered. I know that concussions aren't the only problem (accumulation of thousands of smaller hits can cause just as much damage), but there has to be a better solution than going to the National 7-on-7 League.

Re: NFL may ban 3pt stance

If you read the research, they problems guys have in their 50's are generally the result of many sub-concussive impacts that occur thousands of times per season. The guys that take the most hits like that are linemen. Three or four KTFO hits in a career are not as bad as 10,000 hits that are 1/2 as vicious over the same time span.

Wrong, happens a lot more than you might think, plus there is a lot of damage later in life for linemen. With that said, I can't see them ever making all D linemen stand up.
