    Timeouts

I am sure this has been talked about at some point, but is there anyone else in NCAA worse at using his timeouts than McDermott? He let K-State go on a 13-0 run before deciding to call a timeout in the 2nd half (a 4 point lead to a 9 point deficit). In contrast, Frank Martin sees ISU cut a 9 point lead to 4 and calls a timeout. What happened? K-State goes on a nice 8-0 run to put the Clones away. And it happens just about every game too. And the way we play, those runs kill us. Just is absolutely baffling...

Actually no, it's never been mentioned. Let's discuss.

    Re: Timeouts

He does not like to take them to stop runs. He prefers to save them for the last minute.

I think its time he have the other method a try! The first 5 minutes of the 2nd half kill us consistently. If I was him I would call a TO during that time period if they even hit 2 straight baskets! At least try something to shake it up and reverse this trend of getting killed right out of the game after halftime.

I wonder why he resists this. he has to see this trend as well as we do - why doesn't he change? it is so weird.

Why save them when because of these runs, we are no longer in the game at the end? What good do timeouts do when we are down by 12 or something at the end?

People say GMac is a great coach, but I don't get these 3 things that IMHO are key to being a great coach:
1 - Using timeouts at the correct times
2 - Substituting at the right times
3 - Making adjustments at halftime at during the game

GMac seems to lack in all 3.

Yep, this thread has just been pwned.

    Re: Timeouts

with 2 minutes to go KSU had used all but one timeout.

    ISU had 3 left....

We are probably just more used to a coach that will call timeouts to prevent having to come back from behind... vs saving timeouts so you can come back from behind.

    Re: Timeouts

I wonder if the people on here realize that ISu only had three left inside 2 minutes. You can't call a timeout every time KState scores back to back baskets. The real problem is ISU's inability to score back to back baskets to counter.

    Re: Timeouts

    Just to be correct....

ISU up 4 at the half....
    ISU up 6 at 19:46
    ISU up 4 at 18:48
    ISU up 1 at 17:40
    KSU up 2 at 16:56
    KSU up 4 at 16:23

    MEDIA TIME OUT 15:50

    KSU up 5 at 15:50
    KSU up 7 at 15:11
    KSU up 9 at 15:04

    TIME OUT ISU 15:03

    KSU up 8 at 14:29
    KSU up 10 at 13:32
    KSU up 8 at 13:15
    KSU up 11 at 13:03
    KSU up 9 at 12:30

    TIME OUT KSU at 11:04

    MEDIA TIME OUT 10:21

During that 1st 10 minutes we had 6 turnovers that resulted into 12 KSU points (4 dunks)

    Re: Timeouts

A lack of coaching pretty much summarizes this season. Have we got better during the season? NO... The lack of timeouts taken during runs of other teams is really getting old, but that's just a smidge on the real problems with this program. Something needs to change! Losing at home is old and yet the excuses and spinning will persist amongst many of you. Too bad, because we have some really good talent on this team and helleva lot of great fans at Iowa State. We have made this coach a millionarie and for what? I will ask you to give me 1 legitmate thing he's done as a basketball coach for this university and fans?... Please Jamie make a change, this is too sad to watch for my beloved school of Iowa State.

Sorry, I don't get this. Today he's all over the refs on that goaltending no-call, but keeps it in line enough that he doesn't get the T. Wichita State's coach Gregg Marshall, someone who many on here want to see replace McD, gets called for a tech in the last couple minutes of the UNI game last week. UNI sinks 1 of 2 free throws, and goes on to win by 1. You can't just give points away in close games.

I was just looking at the records the other day and did not realize that GMac is coming off two straight seasons of six home losses. I didn't spend a lot of time, but I think that has not happened in over 20+ years. We have four home losses so far this season, so I don't think we will have 3 straight years of 6 home losses (please), but we will probably flirt with 3 straight seasons of five or more home losses. May have to go back before Orr to find that type of poor result.

Hilton Magic is getting curb stomped.

He just has to win 24 straight games to get back to .500 for his ISU career.

    16-40 Big 12 record
