The thing I wonder about is how it this fire burning underground? You have to have oxygen for fire to burn?

Re: PA town on fire since 1962

If you want to get a real good quick read on the town then get the book, "A walk in the Woods" by Bill Bryson. He is from Iowa originally and wrote a best seller on walking the appalachtian (spelling) trail. He goes to the town and explains what it is like and how the fire is able to burn..............and the whole book is a good read too.

yes, I have been to near here where the signs say go no farther...you can go, of course, but at your own risk. Apparently a few people still live there.

That town is going to have to buy some major carbon credits.

If you look at the photos, there is smoke coming up in places. If smoke can get up, air can get down.

Oxygen deprived fires usually burn slow and very very hot. We have trouble all the time on wildland fires because the roots will catch fire and burn under the fire line. In fact there was a fire in 2003 called the Needles fire. It was started by lightning in late June, a line was put around it and in August it burnt under the line and grew to over 20,000 before they stopped it.
