    Skiing

I just got back from Utah from a ski vacation last week. Anyone else going on a trip this year, or hit the slopes yet?

Got about a foot of snow and in the high 20s, so the conditions were decent. Went to Deer Valley, the Canyons, and Park City. The Canyons blows. I've been there twice and I'm not sure why I went a 2nd time. Great powder in Jupiter and Thaynes in Park City!

Caught a movie at Sundance. Not the best.

I always drive to summit county.

I assume you flew to Utah? What's transportation like? Do you need to rent a car?

    Re: Skiing

We just got back from a trip out to Breck. We skied two days at Breck and one day at Vail. Breck needs some snow (I think they got some after we left) but our day at Vail was really good. I absolutely love it out there...I would move out there in a heartbeat if I could.

Yeah I flew in. Transportation is great there, I went with a friend who rented a car.

The airport in Salt Lake City is only like 20-25 miles from Park City so its really quick and easy to get to. There are also shuttles/vans for something like $30 each way.

Edit: If you stay in Park City there are free shuttle buses that take you to Park City, the Canyons, and Deer Valley (there's a bus route).

    Re: Skiing

Not a big fan of The Canyons either. I actually love the smaller, non-resort type places. Loveland and A-Basin in Colorado, for example. A clear sky day in the back bowls/Blue Sky Basin of Vail makes for one of the best days you could imagine. Doesn't get crowded back there. I've also done quite a few backcountry trips--nothing better than you, a few friends, and the mountain to yourself.

Utah has the best "powder"--lightest snow I've ever experienced, with Tahoe in there too. Steamboat in Colorado comes close to Utah snow, but not quite.

My top 10 places (not really in any order):
    Grand Targhee (ID)
    Loveland (CO)
    Snowbird (UT)
    Northstar (CA)
    Heavenly (CA)
    Purgatory (CO)
    Sugarloaf (ME)
    Jay Peak (VT)
Whistler-Blackcomb (BC, Canada)--spent a week there, still didn't cover everything.
    Brighton (UT)

Oh, and Seven Oaks of course

    Grand Targhee is in Wyoming.

I love Jackson Hole, always went there for spring break. Oddly I never made it to GT.

Ahh indeed. Went there while on a trip to ID so it kinda ran together. Better skiing there than at Jackson Hole IMO...smaller crowd, better snow.

    Re: Skiing

    I'm heading to Utah today...

You need to try some of the other resorts in Little and Big Cottonwood canyons. I grew up in Utah and Alta, Snowbird, Brighton and Solitude are all better than Canyons, Deer Valley, etc. The area where you went is known for never getting enough snow.

Anyway, I'm pumped!! Skiing at Brighton the whole time because my brother is a patroller there and I ski free Well, I do have to bring them a couple bottles of Templeton Rye but that's not a bad deal when I get two free passes for four days!

    Re: Skiing

Oh yeah, I love Alta! They get an insane amount of snow. They didn't get much when I was there so we just stayed in PC. Usually if the resorts up in PC get like 4", the places in big/little cottonwood will get like a foot or more, but that wasn't the case.

I cross-country ski a couple times a week in central Iowa, does that count?

    Re: Skiing

Been to Vail and Breck a couple weeks ago for a weekend trip. At that time, summit county needed snow, probably still do.

I'm heading out to SW Colorado in two weeks. Telluride for 3 days, and Silverton for a day of backcountry/ heli-skiing. I'm pretty excited.
