don't use the word "Frat"... you wouldn't call your mother a "moth" or your country a... um... well you get my point.

Try Sig Ep, not sure about the ISU Chapter, but I had a great experience at Northern Iowa

    Re: Greek Getaway-Frats

SAE had alot of drugs in the house my years at ISU (late 80s/early 90s), but I don't know about now.

Pi Kappa Phi is a good house.

Either way...I think the greek system is a good experience.

Ironic. You get on his case about an abbreviation yet you don't spell out the entire fraternity name. Love it.

I would say you should take this survey: Iowa State University - Interfraternity Council - Recruitment Preference Sheet

It is probably better to have objective advice based on what you want, but you can probably have fun and meet friends in about all of them.

I would find whichever ones are still not dry and apply to them. I can't imagine anything lamer than a dry frat.

They don't anymore they took care of that a long time ago. But honestly the best way to choose a house is to get to know the people. You'll find that each house has a different group of personalities and just pick the one you feel the most comfortable with. Out of sports, socials, academics, community service, and doing stuff on campus find what you like best and choose a house that is interested in those things. If you got any more questions let me know.

There's a difference. Not trying to be nit picky but there is a difference.

I was joking about the "Frat" comment, and Sigma Phi Epsilon goes by Sig Ep as Sigma Alpha Epsilon goes by SAE.

Which happens to be an accepted nickname of that fraternity.

I second taking the survey. There is a wide variety of fraternities on campus as far as size, personalities and campus involvement go.

Please tell me you're joking about not using the word "frat." Please tell me you're not that guy. Only DBs pull out that line when someone says "frat."

Having previously been involved in greek life, I would say don't do it. BUT, everyone is into different things. MAKE SURE you are joining for the RIGHT reasons, I made the mistake of joining for the stereotypical reasons, drinking and women. If you are looking into the bigger house with some party life then check into SAE, Pikes, Delts, Sig Ep and Pi Kapps. If you're looking for more of an academic house Farmhouse and Acacia may be the right fit. There are several houses however where you will not have to go through the "pledge *****" thing, those would be Lambda Chi Alpha and the DU house (are they still around?). They have "associate members" in place of "pledges" which is unique because every person is on the same level, even if you just joined. If you want to become a "frat star" and have the best parties and be known to all the ladies, I would suggest Pi Kapps, SAE or Delts. Lambda Chi was up there once upon a time and I believe Sig Ep was as well.

In my experience I realized how much like high school it all was, all the in-house drama, houses having dumb and unwarrented beef with the other houses, etc. Plus you are forced to be "friends" with folk you may not normally be friends with, especially a problem in a bigger house. Just make sure you are joining to have a tight bond with a group of guys and to become a better man in the process and not just for women and booze. If you choose to join because of women and booze you will find yourself doing a lot of activities and obligations that you will find is not for you.

Good luck with your frat hunting, you will find it pretty easy to get a bid at anyone at this point, the numbers are down with frats.
