    Young to play Nickel??

I read the signing day artical on scout and it had this in it.

Young is a defensive back that could get some immediate playing time in some of Iowa State’s defensive scheme as nickel back because of the multitude of spread offenses in the Big 12.

I figured he was a FS.

They mean nickel in the true sense. I think he is going to be opposite LJ. He won't change positions IMO because he has just 2 years left to play. I think whoever wrote that thinks Benton will slide into Banks' spot and Young would move to nickel however they don't know that Benton plays the nickel becaus ehe is very good there.

Young looks more like a cover guy. Quick feet and good hips. I think he would play corner or nickel.

Young and LJ at corner, Sims and Givens at safety, and Benton in the nickel. I like the sound of that.

Sounds like a solid secondary to me.

One senior and 4 juniors. I hope the backups are getting ready!

I know it sounds a little scary to have all upper classmen in the starting lineup, but that is exactly the way it should be. If you have decent talent coming in every year it should be Juniors and Seniors in every position every year. It's when you have a lot of recruiting misses or attrition is when underclassmen are playing. Unless the freshman or sophomores are absolute studs of course.

Our secondary is really starting to come together. We took a big step up last year with Sims, and now have both Young and Givens to offer more competition.

Coaches must have believe KBanks was the best available corner opposite of LJ, but that position can use an upgrade. Not sure why everyone thinks Benton doesn't have a decent shot and will stay as nickel, but just knowing that Benton and Young will battle is an upgrade over Banks. Then, O'Connell and Givens get to fight for a position that was awarded almost by default last year.

The secondary is probably be the strength of the D next year.

I really like that interview with Young....seems like a good kid with a good attitude. I hope he can get on the field as I see him becoming a fan favorite.

The main reason I see Benton back at the Nickel spot is that he played that spot so well at time last year, not that I don't think he can beat out Young for the other CB spot.

Young is supposed to be one of the best JuCo players available, so I am hoping he will make a big impact.

It will be great to have two really solid corners out there so no team can just throw to the opposite field as LJ. It seemed like Banks got picked on a bit last year.

As far as O'Connell vs Givens, I think Givens might beat out Mike. Mike has worked hard, but I am not sure if he has the overall athletic ability that Givens does. Givens is supposed to excell at deep coverage, which is what we need most out of that safety spot.

Agree totally. Benton is a very good nickel player. We need him there because that's what he excels at.

I HEART our secondary. Get Rony back with something of a pass rush and I think this defense could get up to the middle of the B12 next year.

It doesn't even matter whos back there. Our secondary is always the strength under Ash.

Benton played the hybrid DB/LB position (what we're all calling the nickle) out of necessity last year. I think if the coaches had their druthers, they'd like to see a LB with speed step into that position.

I think the heir apparent to that position is Morgan. In one of the signing day interviews, they called him a unique athlete. At 6-2 to 6-4 (depending on which roster or database you're looking at) he can put on 20-30 pounds and not lose his speed. One of the coaches said at 6-2, 230, he would be the type of LB who would never have to come off the field in passing situations.

To me, Benton is a natural CB and considering the lack of depth there, that's where he needs to be. He might have to play "nickle" again this year out of necessity while the newcomers redshirt and get stronger. But again, I think if the coaches had their druthers, just gathering from what they said about Morgan, they'd rather have a LB with speed there.
