Defensive coach doesn't matter if the players don't want to play it.

Here is my take. A team has to want to play defense. A lot of points come of sheer laziness. There is no effort on that end of the floor. People are lazy closing out and rotating. I don't care what defensive system you run, if the players do not put forth effort, you won't have success. I could put a lot on Mac but I can't put the defensive problems on him. I know, I know, he is supposed to motivate but at this level a kid should not have to be motivated to play defense. They should be able to get themselves going.

That Baylor team we stomped in Hilton last season...we're them. A ton of talent, no effort.

I disagree with this point more than anything on this planet. The only way ISU will ever compete in any sport at a high level is having emotion. That starts with coaching. We will NEVER have multiple McD All Americans on a team. We have to have a coach that is a motivator in order to succeed. McDermott is clearly not.

Paul Rhoads is the perfect example of what can be brought out of a team with an emotional motivational coach.

Now that MBB is back, do we still have to pretend that WBB matters?

We may be the worst weak-side rebounding team I've ever seen wearing Cardinal and Gold.

Re: I thought McDermott was known as a defensive coach

We may have a ton of talent compared to last couple of years but compared to the rest of the Big 12 this year we are not there. I was extremely concerned before the year because we don't have one defensive minded player on the roster and my concerns have been validated.

Completely agree, the talent gap is alarming.

Re: I thought McDermott was known as a defensive coach

I see it as a situation where the coach MAY have lost control of the team. It seems that when you start yelling at a player and that player does not respond there is a issue. If that same player responds to another player that states the same thing then its a coaching issue. I state a coaching issue due to the fact they wont respond the the coach.

The hardest thing is to admit failure when you are expected to win

Re: I thought McDermott was known as a defensive coach

In the end, the players have to have the desire to play defense..... YOu can do all the coaching up you want tou, but until the players desire it, it will never happen.
