IOWA STATE HAS 2010 FOOTBALL CLASS IN HAND

AMES, Iowa – This Iowa State football recruiting class was truly like no other. ISU head coach Paul Rhoads and his assistant coaches had this group locked down early. The Cyclone newcomers include dual-threat quarterback Jared Barnett out of Texas, the first commitment Iowa State received in the class of 2010. Florida prep running back Shontrelle Johnson is also among the class of 28 signees who signed national letters of intent Wednesday to attend and play football at Iowa State.

“When we recruit someone, we recruit the individual, the family and the high school coach,” Rhoads said. “There are some individuals who treat signing day the same way they make reservations at a hotel. They act like they can cancel up to signing day with no penalty. We are comprehensive and selective about who we invite to be Cyclones and that impacts the level of commitment from our newest Iowa Staters.”

Since he was the only one we know that bailed, fair guess.

Re: IOWA STATE HAS 2010 FOOTBALL CLASS IN HAND

I would assume that there is a way they go about it in the recruiting process as to not encourage verbals unless the kids are 100% sure in their own minds.

In the car business, managment always wants sales people to bring offers because when all the groundwork is properly laid, it usually results in a sale. However, there are always salespeople who don't figure this out, (laying the groundwork) and the net result is offers which are more fishing expeditions about price rather than commitments to buy. In these situations, offers are made, accepted, and then the customers decide to "think about it."

The verbal is what the coach wants, but if there are short cuts in the process, I'm sure it compromises the quality of the commitment.

CPR made a good point about questioning the reliablity of the rating system in terms of determining on field success. It appears that he's perfectly content using his own evaluation system to land quality players a little off the beaten path, which is a must at a place like ISU. It might also be easier to lock down an unrated/underrated player.

I can't wait to see how we look after three or four of his recruiting classes because quite frankly, I'm quite impressed.

How can he sign 28? I know you can get a few extra put on last years class but thought it was only 1 or 2 you could do that too.

1 is a greyshirt, 2 are (probably) non-qualifiers and 1 counted against last years class.

That leaves us with potentially one left to give.
