This is a no brainer. Give the man what he wants.

    Re: The Riot/Cubs Arbitration Standoff

The guy played 4 years, 2 of which he was a starter, for $500,000 per. Give the man the extra few hundred k he is asking for.

It had to be frustrating for Theriot to see Soriano and Fukadome pull down $30 million last year while you outperform them by miles and you make $500,000.

I find it hilarious that Cubs will dump so much money on Z, Soriano, Lilly, Fukadome, etc. when its guys like Theriot who are much more consistent.

If they wind up going to arbitration he'll get the $3.4 mill too I bet. If he doesn't want to risk the arbitrator going with the lower figure they'll probably settle around the $3 mil range I bet.

Bit hard to argue the numbers the put forth, however.

What really worries me about this is the Cubs position seems set by the thought they have "the future" for the 6 man sitting in the minors in the form of this Castro kid.

We all recall that Felix Pie was "the future" in center as well.....

    Re: The Riot/Cubs Arbitration Standoff

I was checking out the Cubs payroll earlier this offseason and was shocked that Theriot was only making $500,000. He's at least a 3-4million/per guy with as valuable as he is. He's going to be batting lead off this year.

The Cubs have just flat missed the boat on some of these prospects. Cory Patterson & Felix Pie are the two most recent examples. I read a good deal about Castro last summer and it was an all to familiar tune. It would be great to get Castro to the bigs and move Theriot to 2nd, but we're still at least a year away from that becoming a fixture.

I don't understand what the Cubs are tyring to do right now. I'm completely baffled by some of the moves and signings this team has made. It's like they've said, "**** it. We're going to field a team of almost entirely RH hitters, and we don't give a damn."

As for the pitching staff, the rotation should be better than average, but I'm not sold on the bullpen yet. Also, where is the infusion of youth on this team? It's got to be one of the oldest teams in the league, and a good portion of the stars are on the downside of their primes.

    Re: The Riot/Cubs Arbitration Standoff

theriot will get paid well, but i doubt if he will win the arbitration hearing if it goes that far. mark grace was the last cub to go to hearing and he lost. mark freakin grace. the cubs will slam theriot for his lack of speed, lack of defense (albeit average at worst), lack of power, and lack of experience. arbitration hearings are ugly, very ugly. the player tries to say why he deserves it, and the club tries to argue that he pretty much sucks and doesn't deserve it. i see a settlement for about $2.5 million. if 'The Riot' goes to the point of a hearing, i will lose a lot of respect for him as a team player, and don't see him in a cubs uniform in 2011.

Why would you lose respect for Theriot? Wouldn't you say it's fair to want to be paid similarly to guys playing the same position as you that are putting up similar stats or in some cases, worse stats?

It's not like Theriot is asking for 8-10 mil, he just wants to be compensated fairly.

This is why we have the Cubs. They are always on the mend and ready to play ball the next year.

because nothing about what he has said or shown the past 3 years has led me to believe he was in it for the money. he has always said he just wants to play baseball, he just wants to be on the field and contribute. he has never hinted that he just wants his wallet to get fatter. and i'm sure it's not all him, it's probably mostly his agent, but he has control over his agent and should accept a decent offer when it is put on the table without the need to go to arbitration. he's put up decent stats the past 3 years, but there is nothing about his game that would suggest 3 or 4 million. he is an average hitter, an average fielder, and a below average power guy.
and another point, with the cubs farm system stacked with middle infielders, i am far more concerned with what is going on with the negotiations with carlos marmol than i am with theriot.

Yeah, Theriot is the fun loving, gritty hustler that is a "gamer", but that doesn't mean he doesn't want to get paid properly for what he's doing. I have no problem with him seeking arbitration. It doesn't make him any less of a ballplayer and it sure as hell doesn't take away from his character as one either.

    Re: The Riot/Cubs Arbitration Standoff

I disagree with negotiating with him further. As the article mentions, all of the shortstops making more than the Cubs' proposed figure have been All-Stars at some point in their careers. Theriot is solid, but he's definitely not an All-Star. I agree that it's a crime that Soriano and Fukudome are making so much, but does that by itself justify paying Theriot more, too? Seems like a slippery slope leading to a Yankee-esque payroll.

Also, I can't believe anyone would say to give him what he wants because it's only a "few extra hundred thousand." That's a lot of money, even for most baseball owners.
