Cyclones drop to #4 in latest W.I.N rankings??

    WTF (Why the Face)???

The Rag has the latest W.I.N Rankings in today's paper. Iowa State is now rated #4, behind Iowa (obviously), Boise State and Cornell. We only have two losses (both to Iowa). Didn't we just wipe the floor with Cornell? What has Boise State done lately?

I can't find the W.I.N link, but this HAS to be a misprint by those on 8th and Locust, right?

If this is true, I ask again, WTF?

It's because the Rag doesn't know the difference between Dual Rankings and the Tournament Power Index.

The Dual Rankings were linked above and are up to date. However, W.I.N. projects out the NCAA Tournament as well. After these last few weeks things have been shaken up and it currently goes:

    1. Iowa
    2. Boise St
    3. Cornell
    4. Iowa State

The full Power Index is here: Untitled Page

Thank you. I was wondering if that was the difference after I started the thread. Consider myself a conspirisist. I really dislike that newspaper. The NCAA tournament is almost 2 months away, and they're throwing this jack in there? Probably should have expected it with the "official" Gallick annoucement coming in the last couple days, even though we've all known he was probably out for the season quite some time ago (post-1st Iowa Dual).

I think it's completely fair for us to be ranked at least #3 or #4 in the TPI because Long, Jensen and Sorenson are hard to forecast out and Burk is just not wrestling well. The Rag needs to clarify what they are showing their audience though.

We already know they have lazy editors but the people actually putting in the content need to be held accountable too.

I know this is a dumb question, but can you please explain to me the difference in format in a "Dual" and a "meet"? What exactly is a dual and why are duals scored so much differently? I'm sorry I don't know this and it might be dumb, but I'm not a HUGE wrestling guy, just one who cheers for Iowa State blindly.

Again, this isn't about dual rankings but rather about W.I.N.'s projection of our finish at the NCAAs.

Dual meets are when two schools pit their ten wrestlers against the other schools ten wrestlers. Tournaments are when the wrestlers get put into brackets and earn points for their team. During the season ISU wrestles mostly duals against other teams. The nation title, however, will be decided by a tournament in March.

The Duals are the head-to-head competitions between schools, like we just had against Cornell on Sunday. Those are fairly straightforward. You win more duals, you get ranked higher. Because we've only lost two duals, both to Iowa, we're ranked #2.

The TPI ranking that the Register posted is a projection on how we'll finish in the NCAA tournament. The NCAA brackets are set up by rank/seed, so each wrestler will face someone from a different school. Not all wrestlers will make it to the NCAAs, either, and there's a greater chance of upset. Because we have weaknesses in the lower weights and inconsistencies at 174, there's a greater chance that 1) those wrestlers might not make it or 2) they'll be upset early on. That would potentially lead to fewer team points and a lower placing.

Still, the Register should have either said that was the TPI ranking or done some better fact checking before they printed the article. I know, that's a lot to ask...

I'll give you a hypothetical. Say you have a team with 5 guys at or near the top of their weight class nationally, and 5 below average college wrestlers. If the 5 top guys go on to all win national titles individually (in the national tournament, where people are pitted against each other as individuals - that is not teams, like national duals, which have already been held), those 5 guys alone might score enough to also win the national title as a team. Yet that team, with 1/2 the guys just below average wrestlers, will likely lose quite a few duals.

Similarly, a team with 10 above average wrestlers, but none that are near the top of their weight classes, might win all of its dual meets, but not finish any where near the top in the tournament. That is, if they are not good enough to go deep into the tournament (and score a lot of points) at the end.

Really, thank you. I wasn't really looking at Iowa, but was initially surprised with Boise State and Cornell. When you look at each team, though, these make sense from a TPI perspective.

    - Boise State has a ton of ranked wrestlers, including a 1, 2 and a 3.
    - Cornell has two #1s and a #2

Mods, I have no problem with this one being shut down. I'm not concerned about anything other than the explanation received, especially when the explanation makes sense.

    Thanks again.

+1 on the bolded part. I don't like that character, but that was one of the funnier lines I've heard on t.v. in a long time.

As an aside, why would Cornell be ranked above us in the power rankings? If I remember correctly ISU won 7 of 10 matches against them last weekend. Wouldn't it be a fair assumption to think that those same ISU wrestlers might also do better at nationals? Or do they think that the three Cornell wrestlers that beat ISU are so much better than the top three ISU wrestlers that they will make up for the other 7? Whatever the case, seems like an illogical projection considering the head-to-head results and last year's national results.
