    Window Tinting

Got a new vehicle during the fall of last year. I was looking to get the windows tinted before the summer because the interior is black and I want to avaid fading and oven like temperatures. Was wondering if anyone had suggestions on places they've had experience with and how much it runs these days to get it done

    Re: Window Tinting

I got my Jeep done at Dent Eliminators in Urbandale. I dropped it off in the early bird key box and it was done at noon. Great job. I believe it is a little over $100 for 4 windows and the back one, I only needed the front two and it was $60. Great service and great decision to make.

    Re: Window Tinting

Check with the dealership you bought it from. When I bought my Mustang they discounted the window tint - not sure if it was because I had them put it on before I took the car or if it's a normal thing, but can't hurt to check.

    Re: Window Tinting

Just remember: Legal tint(in Iowa) on the front windows must let in 70% of light(windshield and windows to the left and right of driver). Windows behind driver can have tint as dark as you want.

20% all around! No cops yet... (knock on wood). City police seem cool about it, Troopers, not so much... I've heard they won't pull you over for just tint, but add it on to a speeding ticket etc.

I was pulled over for just tint by a trooper. I've since sold that car. I was doing 74 in a 70 also according to the trooper but it was tint that "caught his attention".

they won't pull you over for just tint,

    False

I had 2 vehicles with tinted front windows and was pulled over with both of them. One ticket $65 trooper outside of Ames and local Newton cop gave us a warning.

They will pull you over just for tint.

I love tinted windows but not worth the hassle.

Speaking from experience, when you get older, they tend to leave you alone.

And having seen the work of many shops in central iowa over the years, quality wise Dent Eliminators is 2nd to none.

    Re: Window Tinting

We had tinted windows that were really dark... We figured they were probably illegal but didn't know. Sure enough, last December (10 months after we bought the car) a State Trooper pulled my wife over at night solely because of the tint and wouldn't let her get off with a warning; issued her an $85 ticket. She had our four month old @ the time in the car who was very fussy after having shots that day and even with that he wouldn't let her off with a warning. He was an *** about the whole thing, even when she explained we bought the car 10 months before that from a local dealer in Cedar Falls.

Anyway long story short it's not worth it to have the front windows tinted in Iowa...

Thats the shade I've got mine at, and that's also exactly what happened to me. Got a speeding ticket and a tint ticket on the same stop. Then I left my wedding band at the rest stop in Victor.

    All in the same day.

    Re: Window Tinting

I was just looking to do it all legal, not really for the looks but to keep the interior from fading as much as possible. Plus the inside is black so it cooks in the summer

As long as you don't drive like a ********, the cops usually won't pull you over just for tint.

I put it on my truck for the same reason; to keep it cool. I have a huge cab and it would just cook during the summer.

    Re: Window Tinting

I've been pulled over for strictly window tint a few times. Once in Newton by a Sheriff, got a $40 ticket. Once on I-35 by a trooper, $70 ticket. And once again in Ames by a trooper, but I got a warning because in the process of getting pulled over I got a flat tire so he gave me a break.
I also got tint warnings for the times I got pulled over for a burnt out license plate bulb and for speeding.
My windows are 5% in the back and the front two windows are 30%. Not worth the hassle IMO. I will never get my front windows tinted again.

Like others have said before, the Police usually don't care unless you are doing something else wrong, it seems like just Sheriff's and State Troopers are the ones that will pull you over for tint.

    Re: Window Tinting

Ahhhh - Jeep Cherokee, fairly plain Jane, not tripped out. Bought it used - came with tinted windows. I was pulled over twice in 3 years specifically for the tint. (Once in Carroll, for all ya who think it's a great town, and the other a trooper. In Carroll he told me to get it removed, and if he saw it again it'd be a ticket. Since I only went through about twice a week, I just took to totally opening the two front windows on my way through, no matter the time of year, weather or temperature. ). Was not speeding and no other issue came up. I got warnings both times.

My husband starting driving it and within 6 months had two tickets specifically for the tint. We ended up removing the tint on the front two windows - no issue since. He's still POed
