    next years defensive 2 deeps

    let's hear em.

    I'm going with:

    DE-Nelson/Maggit
    DE-Parker/Lattimer or Neal?
    DT-Alburtis/Mcdonough
    DT-Johnson/Rump
    LB-Knott/Mattison
    LB-Klein/Hubert
    LB-Taufoo/George
    DB-Young/Benton/Washington
    DB-LJ/Reeves
    S-Sims/Bennett
    S-Givens/O'Connell

    Nickel-Benton/Mattison

I actually like our d-line as long as everyone stays healthy-Neal is more then likely going from starter to 2nd or 3rd string depending on how Lattimer can handle the position.

LB is very young, but I think it is safe to say that this group is more athletic then last years core-hope that can help with the learning curve they will face.

I think the secondary is solid as far as the starters go, but the reserves may leave a little to be desired.

Not sure why too worried with depth in secondary. O'Connell was starter last year, along with Benton for bowl game and Reeves played quite a bit last year. Also, Washington supposedly was great on practice squad. Worried more about depth of LB core. Top three look pretty solid, but hope to not have to rely on the three freshmen backups. Looks like a very solid LB core for the future though. Defense looks like it can hold its own. Hope the offense improves in second year of system and it could be another good season.

Hubert was recruited as an OLB, according to one report I've read (not premium), which is good news to me. It's good that the staff thinks he has the speed to OLB, considering his lousy 40 time in his profile. He must have been injured when he ran that.

I think the more likely lineup is for Taufoo to play backup at MLB and for a couple of the freshmen to be in the two deeps at one of the OLB spots. Or Hamlin may surprise all of us and grab one of those spots. He's up to 220 now and maybe he's ready to play.

Also, I see a lot of people putting Rump second team. But I actually thought he was one of our better DL toward the end of the year. I'd be surprised if he isn't starting.

Is Lattimer a DE for sure? He's still listed as a LB on the roster.

Re: next years defensive 2 deeps

I don't see anything wrong with that. I think a lot will depend on if Benton is our second best cover corner. I hope that Young can come in and be ready right away. That gives us the ability to leave Benton at that spinner spot . I think in times, Mattison is the ideal type of player for that spot but I am always for redshirts if it is possible.

There was a free story on the Scout site where they interviewed Burnham, who said they were going to move Lattimer to DE in the spring to see how he does.

Re: next years defensive 2 deeps

    OK, here's my shot:

    DE: Parker, Maggitt, Scott
    DT: Johnson, McDonough/Laing
    NG: Rump, Alburtis, Black, Woods
    DE: Nelson, Neal, Lattimer/Moore

    SAM: Hamlin/Mattison, Hubert
    MIKE: Klein, Taufoou
    WILL: Knott, Hamlin, George

    NB: Benton, O'Connell

    CB: Young/Brooks/Washington
    FS: Givens, O'Connell
    SS: Sims, Sandvig
    CB: LJ, Reeves

I think that open CB spot is going to be a battle.

Re: next years defensive 2 deeps

Hubert will probably be the only freshman linebacker to not redshirt barring injury. Mattison and George are too undersized at this point. Unless they can put on 15- 20 pounds of muscle, I can not see them not red shirting. Mattison may also be a safety prospect, which could get him on the field.

I'm 99.9% sure Taufoou will start at the mike and Klien has one of the other spots locked down. I would guess Knott gets the other spot but it would be nice if a true freshman can steal it away.. or a darkhorse could be Bo Williams... but maybe not now with that new RB moving to WR.

I think the depth at DL will surprise you. I am looking for a surprise at DE, a LB is not a bad choice at all to move to that position. Maybe a quick DL would do some wreckage at that position as well.

    Nice job on the breakdown.

I see O'connel probably starting since Givens won't get here until the summer, but it would be great if he came in and started because then he would be an upgrade.

This looks really close IMO. However, there is no way in the world that Hamlin will be starting or even getting much playing time IMO. Some on here have said he's up to 220 lbs, but I don't see it. The kid's arms and legs are thin as rails. He must have a huge you-know-what if he weighs 220 lbs.

The LB position does actually scare me to death though. I have to admit that it is weaker than any position on the DL now. There is hardly ANY experience there whatsoever to speak of. Yikes.
