I don't question this teams heart or desire...

There has been a lot said about how we are or aren't playing. In my view, this team plays with a lot of heart and desire. They have played with injuries, players sick and players quitting. But the game I saw is a bunch of guys trying as hard as they can to win the game. You can question the x's and o's all you want, but for me, the players are working their butts off.

Re: I don't question this teams heart or desire...

I am not involved except as a distant observer, but it seems to me more of a problem of focus. Like statring many games not ready to play. And many of those turnovers are just carelessness. Trying to throw the ball through or over a taller defender, or looking away before they catch the ball. And isn't concentration a big part of shooting free throws?

I would agree that most of the time they are playing hard, doing the best they can with the situation. However, playing hard and playing smart are two different things. We need both to win.

I still question it...You can see at times its lacking which leads to them playing less smart.

Re: I don't question this teams heart or desire...

I don't agree with the OP. They play hard when they want to. Mistakes are going to be made, they're inevitable, but when people are just jogging after a guy with the ball on a breakaway, that's not playing hard.

And would SOMEBODY give someone on the opposing team a hard foul? Gilstrap and Brackins can both easily elevate to make a play on the ball so they don't get a flagrant. Foul 'em hard. They'll remember that next time they go in.

Re: I don't question this teams heart or desire...

I would never question a player's desire unless they just appear uninterested on and off the court, but I do agree that there's just not a lot of confidence and focus flowing throughout the team. Definitely needs to get better out there. Nothing has surprised me so far this season in terms of wins and losses. It can get better from here on out because lord knows the team has the talent to do so. They just need to gel -- and fast.

Ketelmeister, I am usually in agreement with your posts, but I think I'd have to argue this particular post with you.

In athletics, almost everyone plays hard - it's a given. What often separates the winners from the losers is the ability to play harder than you think you're capable of - to dig down really deep and find something in the tank when you could swear your tank is completely empty.

I think our guys genuinely feel like they are giving their best effort, but I also think there's so much more they could be giving that they aren't. I don't think it's a reflection of their character (I believe they are young men of high character for the most part). I think it's just a reflection of how bad they really want it.

Heart and desire? Watch the first ten minutes of the last two games.

    Fixed for truth.

    Cyclone
Iowa State became the Cyclones after they leveled Northwestern in 1895. As the Chicago Tribune (9/29/1895) noted:
    'Struck by a Cyclone
It Comes from Iowa and Devastates Evanston Town'

Unfixed - Original statement also truth.

Listen, these guys are good guys, and they put forth a hell of an effort, and show awesome desire most of the time. I haven't seen the mental toughness to bring the same effort for 40 minutes yet. That's why we have 8 losses, IMO. When we "bright it," we can beat any team. I truly believe that. But we still are haunted by our lapses where the effort/focus just isn't quite there. I understand all teams have lapses and bad stretches of games; ours are REALLY bad.

    Again, just my opinion...

Heart and desire has a lot more to do with the end of the game.

Consistent effort is something different than heart and desire.

Like the OP I don't question this teams heart and desire, I do question their level of effort early in the games. That is something that REALLY needs to be fixed quickly.

In my mind consistent effort is what defines heart and desire.
