    Re: Rodney Heemstra vanishes

How did he get "voluntary manslaughter" for shooting a guy in the head and dragging his body with a pickup truck out to a field to hide it?

edit: the guy's been out of jail for 2 years?

Yeah, I think he got off on a technicality or something. The dude was guilty as hell. He admitted he did it!

    Re: Rodney Heemstra vanishes

He got away with murder and now is getting away with all his money, minus his property which the courts will sell. He did less jail time than people who get busted with pot!

    Re: Rodney Heemstra vanishes

I wouldn't really call it a technicality. Given the supreme court's decision it took away the possibility of Felony Murder (1st Degree Murder), and given the choice between 2nd Degree and Voluntary Manslaughter, a jury (who are the only qualified people to make the decision, certainly none of us here are) decided on Voluntary Manslaughter.

    Re: Rodney Heemstra vanishes

Allowing the murdered mans medical record in as evidence was the issue and no matter who was on the jury, I can't for the life of me come up with a reason to shoot an unarmed man when I am holding a gun, can get back in my pickup, turn around go home, or call the police.

Heemstra got away with murder, plain and simple.

Don't forget about all of his crying on the stand. I am guessing the only reason he cries is because he was caught.

Any lawyer or judge will tell you that there has never been a jury that could possibly be described as "qualified."

I don't know what this means, but I can tell it's BS.

A "technicality" gave him another trial. Since then the loop hole he used has been fixed so everyone else couldn't use it as well.

You have much more faith in the judicial system than most.

Heemstra shot another man in the head in cold blood, dragged his dead body with his truck and dumped him into a cistern. He then "participated" for days in the search for Tom Lyon. If it was truly self-defense, he would have fessed up to it right away. The man is a coward who should be rotting behind bars at this very moment.

Others spend more time in jail for stealing cars, smoking pot, etc. etc. Meantime, a wife has been widowed and she and her family must spend their remaining years with only their memories of Tom Lyon while Heemstra gets to spend the rest of his days in freedom with the comfort of his family.
