Eye opening view of college athletes

Tom Shatel with the OWH wrote an insightful article about some of the issues that today's athletes and coaches have to deal with. It might be a good read for those who's reaction to a struggling team is to rip the players or coaches.

The coaches are paid alot of money to do the job, and players get plenty of benefits being a college player. Enough with this arguement. PLease

Re: Eye opening view of college athletes

Thanks for sharing, that's a good article.

I think the point is: there was so much pressure on everyone involved and not everyone can deal with it . The players used to be superstars in their HS, now they have to accept that several players are better, or much better, than them. If you have the maturity, you'll know that there are people who are better than you and you need to figure things out to get better. You'll also have players who are suddenly pampered by attention, by people telling them how great they are and they future will be. Add the pressure from the fans.

But how many 18 years old have the maturity and the ability to handle the pressure and stay level headed ? Not many, even with 24-25 year-olds.
I used to work in a place where people get promoted to the next level after 2 years, regardless of their performance and I often saw that once people get promoted from the bottom to the next level, they think that they're the center of the universe. Another issue I and my colleagues found was it was really difficult to have them accept "needs for improvement" comments because they used to be "superstars" at school with at least 3.0 GPA.

And these are 24-25 year-olds. Imagine with 18 year olds.

Good article. There's some behind the scenes stuff we don't see with any of the teams. Some fans don't understand the pressure.
