Is ISU the NCAA's most tortured team?

While reading Bill Simmons' latest article I found my self thinking that Iowa State may be the most tortured team in all of college sports. Here is the article: Bill Simmons: The Levels of Loving - ESPN

Bill only breaks down the most tortured professional teams, but here are his criteria.

    1. You need at least a 35-year drought without a title.
    2. That 35-year rule doesn't apply to relocations.
    3. During that 35-plus years without a title, it's not enough to lose. You need to have your guts wrenched a few times.
    4. Only teams in cold-weather cities are eligible for Level 1 unless the situation is so cruel/unusual/unforgiving that it's practically unprecedented.
    5. You need to be just pessimistic enough to keep your guard up for a sucker punch but just optimistic enough to keep lowering your guard at the worst possible time.
    6. Outsiders need to instinctively empathize during a Level 1 takedown.

You need to read the article to fully understand what he is talking about, but we definitely qualify for a tortured fan base. My question is this, out of all the major conference teams, are we the MOST tortured?

There would definitely be some validity to this with the football program. It depends if you include conference championships or not pertaining tot he eligibility of the bball program.

Obviously we have had some recent success with the basketball team and winning the final Big 8 Conference tourney and the BigXII title a couple times as well. However, I think our basketball team provides more "crushing losses" as well. Tough to completely compare apples to apples with college and professional athletics.

Everyone has crushing losses. I would say two conference championships within the same decade disqualifies us from this race.

Football may be a different story.

How many schools actually ever in their history win or even come close to a national championship in football or mens or womens basketball. And you could even say conference championships. I bet nationwide, about 15% of the schools win about 95% of the titles.

I don't know about the percentages but I agree with the premise. If you make the "championship" that Simmons refers to the conference title for each team it would be more clear. ISU football fits the bill perfectly as well. Crushing big game losses, no title, and it's cold.

First. We may be tortured currently in hoops but cutting the nets down twice in recent memory isn't tortured, its a blessing. But in football...

2 things. 1) I would love to see someone in football division I's claim and arguement as to how they are more tortured than us. 2) I would love to see anyone that claims to be as tortured as us show the % of capacity that we put out for football games.

and as a bonus. I would love to see a team claiming to be as tortured as ISU with more people that complain about uniforms as oppossed to on the field issues.

Re: Is ISU the NCAA's most tortured team?

I was at a wedding in NYC this fall, and I was talking to a guy who was a big college football fan and was reasonably familiar with ISU. When I explained the entire history of ISU football, he was just stunned.

When I gave him the attendance statistics, he about fell out of his chair.

Did you make sign a release/waiver before you told him?

Should have. The guy was honestly touched by the story, as a sports fan. He was a Penn State fan, and Pittsburgh is the farthest west he's ever been in his entire life. You could tell that when you're telling him about the 2004 season that his eyes were lighting up, and he was really excited for ISU, and then he winced when he heard about the Mizzou game, and then the entire story of the 2005 season was almost too much.
