    Re: Paul Shirley response

I was surprised by Paul's cynical views on the disaster, especially when he should be smart enough to know that natural disasters will happen and nobody can predict accurately where or when, at least very far in advance. And every region is prone to its own kinds of disasters, whether it's earthquakes, volcanoes, sunami's, hurricanes or tornadoes, and no amount of preparation can prevent all or even most of the damage and tragic loss of life. Add in the poverty for many locations and it's magnified. Paul isn't alone in his philosophy, I'm just really dissappointed and imo it shows a shocking lack of compassion from a guy I thought was a good guy

I think Paul's primary mistake was approaching it from a detached, intellectual standpoint, and not being very clear about what he was trying to get across. Not to mention, the timing was horrible. I also think a strong case can be made that continually giving away free food is not as compassionate as teaching them how to acquire their own. But once again, this is not necessarily the time to bring that up, in that way.

excellent point. I think timing was his biggest mistake in all this. 6mo/1 year from now, and his column probably would not have garnered the same attention. I happen to disagree with most of what he has written, but I can see why someone might feel the way he does.

    Re: Paul Shirley response

Agree now is not the time to worry about people getting free food in their dire situation. There will be a time when the world should want some of this money going toward long term solutions to the widespread poverty in that country. I think the current government is better (less corrupt) than what Haiti has had in the past, I just hope they will have the money and will to pass good laws so the rebuilding is done with decent building standards that are enforced, and a judicial system and law enforcement that can prevent the haves from preying on the have nots. It's a huge problem but there are smart people that are working on it.
