LED vs LCD and the rest

So my friend tells me about this LED T.V. that he is going to buy for $1900. It's 55 inches. He claims it's the best ever. I don't really know much about T.V's other than watching them. I have a 42 inch. How much better is this LED then every other t.v. I want a 55 inch but I am not sure if would be worth it to spend some extra money to get the LED kind instead of the normal flatscreen. Help Please.

Never heard of a LED TV. Didn't know they could use LEDs in that way.

Pretty sure LED Tvs are just LCD Tvs with LED light source (backlight), resulting in more even light distribution and better contrast.

Tell your friend I talked to an electronic engineer who owns two TV shops and he convinced me never to buy an LED TV. He said the repair rate is very high on them. He says most of his repair jobs are on LEDs and that's despite the fact that they consitute only about 5-10 percent of the TVs sold. Most of them are LCDs or plasma.

The LED he had on his showroom floor hooked up to a bluray player was awesome and it was only an inch and a half thick, but he told me don't buy that one. Maybe when the technology is a little more advance, I would consider it again.

Re: LED vs LCD and the rest

An LED is technically pretty much the same thing as a regular LCD. Right now, the difference is the LCD televisions have light bars behind the pixels to illuminate them and thus the are a bit thicker. An LED television, especially the really thin ones, are backlit by LED's that are spaced around the edge of the television.

In reality, you will probably get more accurately produced dark colors from a back lit LCD than an LED television, because you can not completely turn off the LED's when they are surrounding the edge of the TV as some need to be turned on to iluminate the pixels that are not dark. This causes a 'Halo' effect around the edge of the television. If you read reviews for these televisions on Amazon, this is a HUGE complaint.

He's got a 55" LED and you only have a puny 42" LCD?
