Drive from Iowa City to Waterloo

Hi all, I have a bit of a strange (and certainly off-topic) question for all of you. I have the possibility of taking a judicial internship in Waterloo, and currently live in Coralville. It would be a great opportunity, but I am a bit weary of the drive. Does any make that drive often? How long does it take, and what kind of traffic can I expect? Thanks in advance.

Re: Drive from Iowa City to Waterloo

I grew up near Waterloo, it's around a 75 minute drive to IC. I used to drive from Waterloo to CR for an internship and enjoyed the drive.

75 minutes during "rush hour" or 75 minutes driving 75 the whole way?

Re: Drive from Iowa City to Waterloo

When I started with my current company, I drove 75 miles to and from work, while working 10-14 hour days (that doesn't count the drive time). That sucked ***, and will wear you down quickly.

Re: Drive from Iowa City to Waterloo

I drive from IC to Wloo quite a bit for work (not daily). I usually figure 90 minutes depending on where you are going in Wloo. It's a brainless drive except for winding thru CR. 380 can be a debacle during rush hour since nobody understands the concept of the left lane being the passing lane. Once you hit Collins Rd, it's pretty easy sailing. I guess it depends on how long the job runs. If it's one semester, very doable.

Re: Drive from Iowa City to Waterloo

It is about a 75 minute drive, then depending on where in Waterloo it could take up to 90 minutes.

I commute from Iowa City to Cedar Rapids a couple times per week and to tell you the truth... I 380 might be the worst stretch of highway in Iowa in the winter. Snow, ice, and 50 mph winds can turn a 30 minute commute into 2.5 hours. I would consider that.

Thanks for the info it has been helpful. The internship wouldn't be until May and end in August, so I wouldn't be too worried about the snow!

Re: Drive from Iowa City to Waterloo

Worst traffic will be between you home and Cedar Rapids. I would say 60 minutes from Quaker Oats in CR to the court house in Waterloo, if that helps... Waterloo does not have a good way to get from 380/20 to down town.

For 3 months in good weather, I wouldn't think twice. The drive won't be fun, but it is pretty mindless.

My brother-in-law makes the drive from Solon to Waterloo everyday. He says it's not a bad drive unless the weather is crappy.

Iowa City to Cedar Rapids will be the worst. CR to Waterloo is easy.

If it's just for the summer, why not sublease an apartment from a UNI student that will be out of town for the summer?

Yeah, if you're weary already, and you haven't even driven it, it's probably not for you!
