    McDermott, Pearl say no

Both put halt to Iowa talk

    By Scott Dochterman
    The Gazette
AMES — Iowa State men’s basketball coach Greg McDermott halted any speculation Tuesday he is interested in coaching cross-state rival Iowa.
Former Iowa assistant coach Bruce Pearl did the same.
    Iowa seeks a new coach after Steve Alford resigned last week to coach New Mexico’s men’s b a s k e t b a l l team.
McDermott left Northern Iowa for Iowa State last spring after Athletics Director Jamie Pollard fired Wayne Morgan. McDermott, 42, coached UNI to three consecutive NCAA tournament berths in his fiveyear tenure. He is a Cascade native.
‘‘Nothing against the University of Iowa — it’s a great institution — and I have a lot of great friends that are huge Hawkeye fans, but I made a decision to come to Iowa State for all the right reasons,’’ McDermott said. ‘‘I’ve been welcomed here with open arms, and my family has quickly become part of this community.
‘‘Even if I was interested, it wouldn’t be the right thing to do.’’
Moving from one in-state school to another could take an emotional toll, McDermott said
‘‘It was tough enough for me to make the move from Northern Iowa to Iowa State,’’ McDermott said. ‘‘I think it depends on the person.’’
Iowa State finished 15-16 this season.
McDermott didn’t share any rumors regarding Iowa’s open position.
‘‘I’ve had an opportunity to meet Gary Barta, and I’ve followed his career since he was at Northern Iowa at one time,’’ McDermott said. ‘‘He’s very good at what he does. I think he’ll hire a coach who’s a great fit for the Hawkeyes.’’ One day after Tennessee Athletics Director Mike Hamilton gave permission for Iowa officials to speak with Pearl, the Volunteers’ coach slammed shut all rumors Tuesday that he planned to return.
‘‘I’m putting it out there just as fast as I can because I don’t want it to be a concern of our fans, and I want to demonstrate my loyalty and my commitment to this program. I appreciate very much being here, so I don’t want them to worry about me going anywhere,’’ Pearl told The Associated Press on Tuesday. ‘‘This is where I want to be. I want to be here as long as they’ll be happy with me here.’’
Pearl said in a statement he never considered leaving Tennessee and spoke with Barta on Tuesday ‘‘as a courtesy.’’ Pearl was an Iowa assistant under Tom Davis from 1986 to 1992, when he left to become head coach at Division II Southern Indiana. He coached at Wisconsin-Milwaukee from 2001 to 2005 before heading to Tennessee.
Pearl got a two-year extension after last season through 2012 with an escalating pay scale each year.
His total compensation package will increase from $1.1 million this year to $1.2 million next year. Hamilton said Pearl, who has a $1 million buyout clause, also would receive a one-year extension through 2013.
Pearl currently has a $1 million buyout clause.
Pearl caused a stir during his time at Iowa for his role in a recruiting scandal. Pearl gave the NCAA tape he’d secretly recorded that started a long investigation, resulting in Illinois being banned from the postseason in 1991.

That is AWESOME!!! I wish I had nothing to do so I could spend time on the EIU message boards so I could find all the reasons why McDermott will take the EIU job even though he now has gone on record saying "Thanks, but no way pal"

Iowa State head coach Greg McDermott reacts during a game at the Big 12 tournament earlier this month in Oklahoma City. McDermott and Tennessee's Bruce Pearl, a former Iowa assistant coach, both said Tuesday they have no interest in the Iowa job vacated last week when Steve Alford accepted the head coaching position at New Mexico.

    Love it!

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

Glad that rumor is layed to rest. Greg is honorable man and I thought it would be really out of character for him to make another jump after he committed to ISU,

It's a joke that he even needed to say anything at all but I'm glad that people will finally shut up about it.

    Re: McDermott, Pearl say no

A number of programs are hoping to sign athletes in the spring period - they don't want any speculation to make that more difficult. Though it seems unkind to the hiring school, providing a string of turn-downs, I'm not surprised to see some coaches issue prompt and emphatic denials. Altman, I assume is renegotiating his contract.
