Anyone ever had their car stolen?

Mine was taken at 6:20 pm right in front of my eyes. I stopped to get take-out, and parked right in front of the restaurant. I left the car running and was inside literally two minutes. I came out, and three gentlemen were getting into my car. They realized it was my car they were stealing, and floored it in reverse, and then in drive (to the complaint of my transmission). I grabbed the door handle (without a plan of what I would do if I got it open) but it drove away from my grasp.

    police report was filed
    insurance claim filed
    apartments locks are already changed.

Anything else I should look out for or expect?

Re: Anyone ever had their car stolen?

yeah, thats not good. Make sure you remember all of the things that were in your car too!!!

I had a buddy that had his car stolen when he lived in Arizona and he had golf clubs, C.D.'s, and an IPod in there that added up to alot of money. Crazy part of the story was that his golf clubs, an ipod, and the stack of C.D.'s showed up at a pawn shop a mile away. The guy that owned the pawn shop was suspicious of how the guy got the stuff (since he appeared homeless), called the cops, and he was eventually arrested...

Sorry about your luck, but if you are in Madison, you should know better.

Re: Anyone ever had their car stolen?

Friend of mine had the same thing happen from my backyard when I lived in Des Moines. He chased it down the street...

Good thing you dealt with your locks already. Remember they also got your personal information via paperwork in the care (well, I assume) so consider Lifelock. A year ago my wallet was stolen in Mexico and it was the first thing I did. Well worth the peace of mind. I checked out Lifelock's competitors and Lifelock clearly had the best product.

My friend didn't want to settle with the insurance - kept waiting for the car to be found. Eventually found it in Florida about 2 months later - had the crap beat out of it. He took the car back instead of cash from the insurance. Ack! My advice is if the insurance is offering you a decent settlement, TAKE IT.

Could just be a vagrant that wants to sleep in your car. Or maybe they'll just use it as a toilet and move on.

Hopefully its just someone taking it on a joyride and itll turn up abandoned somewhere

Re: Anyone ever had their car stolen?

My brother had his car stolen out of his parking garage in San Diego, gets a call from the police dept a week later that the car was at a local towaway. Cost him $500 to get it out after the 3 days they had it, a kick to the pills he was not too happy about.

Re: Anyone ever had their car stolen?

How old was it? Did you have your cell phone in it? Some newer cars and cell phones can be tracked to find their whereabouts. Otherwise, I'd start looking for a new car. With the way that people treat rental cars, I can't imagine what they are doing with a stolen car. Even if you find it, it's probably going to be in bad enough shape that you may not want it back.

Oh man that sucks! Where abouts in Madison? I live here as well, just curious. I heard on the south side there has been an increased number of car thefts. All and all Madison isn't too bad for this sort of stuff. Sorry to hear about this man.

That definately sucks to hear. Whatever comes from all of this, I'd say invest in LoJack. I don't drive an overly nice car, but it is definately attractive to thieves and it definately helps with some peace of mind knowing that my car can be easily located if someone gets any funny ideas.

Whitney way - the strip mall just to the north of the beltline. I was getting sushi at Takara.

NEVER thought it would happen to me, especially in Madison. It's funny, I was sitting in the Cop car filing a report, and a message came across the cop's computer - someone had checked Allied Dr. area right away. No luck. Kind of funny, but if I was a cop, that's the first place I would look too.

Re: Anyone ever had their car stolen?

My neighbor and I both had Mustangs a few years ago Both were stolen the at same time around three o'clock in the morning. I found it missing the next morning but before I could call and report it missing, the Detroit Police called me to say they had found both of them parked on a Detroit city street with busted windows and ignitions. I got the car fixed and gained a large screwdriver that they used to steal the car but lost all of my tunes. Apparently the "chop shops" were full that night and they thieves didn't want to be caught in a stolen car so they just dumped them on a side street. The Detroit Police were cruising and noted that those two cars didn't fit the neighborhood, so they had them towed to safety before they could be stripped any further.
